What if getting better at golf didn't have to be a solo pursuit?

The Golfers' Guild is an experiment in something many of us are missing: a place to practice, learn, share ideas, and enjoy the game alongside other golfers who care about improvement.

No lessons. No league. No pressure.

Just golfers showing up with their real game, their curiosity, and a willingness to help each other grow.

Our first meetup is tentatively scheduled for June 18 at @ladera_golf

The Golfers’ Guild is heading back to UNM Championship Course this Thursday, October 15.

We’ll practice, share what we’re working on, and have the option to play the 3-hole loop together—a chance to take the practice onto the course.

A new place to practice this month!!!

The fourth Golfers’ Guild meetup will be Thursday, September 17, from 4:30–6:00 PM at the UNM Championship Golf Course.

I found out about their 3-Hole Course a few weeks ago and decided that the next meetup would be at UNM Championship Golf Course!

They have a range, a good short-game area, and the three-hole course that wraps around the practice facility. The plan is to practice for a while, then I’ll head out and play the three holes.

Join for either part, move between the different areas, or just work on whatever your game needs that day.

Range balls are $7. The three-hole course costs between $6–$8 and is completely optional.

No one else made it out to Thursday’s meetup.

I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t disappointing. I packed the balls, showed up, and hoped a few golfers would join me.

But the practice still happened.

I hit balls, spent some time with my game, and kept the commitment I made to the meetup and to myself.

Building a community probably includes days like this. Quiet days. Empty-range days. Days when showing up has to be enough.

The Golfers’ Guild is still here. We’ll try again.

No one gets better alone, but sometimes, you still have to begin that way.

What happens when you change the tool?

I’ve been practicing with this old blade putter—not because I think it will fix my stroke, but because it gives me a different putting problem to solve.

The weight, balance, shape, sound, and feel are different from my usual putter. Those changes give me new information and ask my body to adapt.

This is one way to introduce variability into practice. Instead of trying to repeat one identical movement, you create opportunities to explore different solutions while keeping the intention the same: start the ball on your line with the right speed.

Try this:

5 putts with your usual putter.
10–15 with an old or different putter.
5 more with your usual putter.

Change the distance and break as you go. When you switch back, pay attention:

What feels different?
What became clearer?
What did the other putter teach you?

The goal isn’t inconsistency. It’s adaptability.

At our second meetup, one of the golfers asked how you improve clubface control.

My first thought was: slow-motion swings.

After looking further into the motor-learning research, I think that answer was partly right.

Slowing a movement down can make it easier to explore. It gives you an opportunity to notice what the club is doing, experiment with a different solution and produce the movement without speed immediately taking over.

But the goal is not to become great at swinging slowly.

Speed changes coordination. A movement that works during a rehearsal still has to be gradually brought back to the speed and conditions where you will actually use it.

Try this:

Make a few continuous swings at 30% speed.

Hit several small shots through a start-line gate.

Then build toward 50%, 70% and normal speed—without losing the intended starting direction.

Slow down to discover the movement.

Speed up to make it usable.

That is the difference between rehearsing a position and learning a skill.

got to the course a little early and found a heron standing by the pond.

It flew off before the meetup started.

I'm not superstitious...

...but I am willing to accept that The Golfers' Guild has official bird approval.

The first Golfers’ Guild meetup is officially in the books.

Two people showed up. One was someone I knew from work, and he brought a friend. That might sound small, but honestly, it felt big.

Because the point was never to launch with a huge crowd. The point was to create a space where golfers could show up, practice, ask questions, work on their game, and not feel like they had to prove anything.

Today, that happened.

We hit balls, talked through the game, worked on some things, and got the first one started. Simple. Real. Worth doing again.

Thanks to the two who came out and helped make the first Golfers’ Guild meetup what it needed to be: a beginning.

No one gets better alone.
