Joey will always be the greatest guy ever. Nothing will ever replace my wonderful amazing soul dog, I will always love him and miss him everyday, and idk if I’ll ever stop mourning him but this house felt too dark and Empty without four legged energy. So we made the hard but wonderful choice to keep our hearts open and welcomed a new soul into the family.

On Sunday I had to do the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do and say goodbye to my best friend, Joey, the sweetest soul, my soul dog, my best man and the biggest part of myself. It was sudden and unexpected and the biggest loss of my whole life but I take comfort that he was not in pain and there was no suffering. My heart is in pieces It’s taken me days to stop crying enough to be able to post this it makes it feel too real. You gave me 11 amazing years together and I’m so grateful for every fucking second of it. You were there when no one else was. You showed me love at first site can be real. I just always wanted to be with you and you just always wanted to be with me. My protector, my co pilot, my adventure buddy my whole heart. We were a package deal a perfect match from day one. All either of us wanted was someone who would never leave and we found that in each other and we never did and never will. I’m always with you and you’re always with me. I am so lucky for every second I got with you. You are my everything always and forever the best guy. I can’t thank you enough for the gift of being your dad. This year has been filled with stress and survival at times as we’ve started figuring out how to navigate this life together. But when I look back at the year so far, I also see a year filled with adventure and chasing waterfalls with my best friend.

Road trips listening to podcasts about crazy bitches, exploring mountain towns, Brazilian nights, and lake days. My favorite place has become the driver’s seat with you—my copilot, my ride or die—in the passenger seat, and Peggy, our precious cargo, chewing on something she probably shouldn’t be in the back.

We’ve weathered storms, literally and figuratively, this year, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have you by my side through all of it.

On this day 8-8-14 12 years ago today I brought you home and I will never forget that day. I wanted to be your dad so bad from the moment I saw you I loved you instantly. I did everything I could to get us a home where we could be together and on this day I brought you home to that tiny cramped apartment, but it was home because we were together. I always remember the first night when you fell off the bed and looked at me like I pushed you. The first walk through CU campus splashing in the stream. Together we were complete. A package deal always. This year hasn’t been the same without you some days straight up unbearable but I think of you always miss you every day and would give anything to hold your paw and pet your velvety pizza slice ears I love you sweet baby boy. Six weeks ago you crash-landed into our lives like the cutest fuzzy little wrecking ball and somehow it already feels like you’ve always been here.

You’ve learned so much in such a short time… how to nap like a pro, how to splash like a maniac, and how to steal sips of my coffee when I’m not looking. Everything — and I do mean everything — is about tennis balls now. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Joey had this little ritual that was all his own. If he found a stick or ball on a walk, he’d get laser-focused — no more sniffing, no more wandering. His mission was clear: carry it all the way home. He’d make a straight beeline for @jakecambron ‘s bed, his safe spot, and drop it there like a treasure.
