New Book Review:
Breathing Under Water by Jacquline Friedland was a relatable and compelling story of keeping your family afloat during the harried time of parenthood. Additionally, this book is a welcome reminder of how a stranger can your life for the better.

The book mainly focuses on two women - Berry, a mother of two sons, one of whom has autism. The other is McKenna, a young woman taking care of her grandmother, all while working full time. The magic of the story was how these two women, in completely different stages of womanhood, found each other and allowed themselves to ask for help. Women are so trained to do everything themselves and often feel as if asking for help is a form of weakness.

Leo, Berry’s son, is the superhero in the story as he goes through life on the spectrum. He’s a good looking and overall, a great kid, yet he deals with so much on a daily level. Watching him grow into himself and finding an endearing friendship with McKenna was lovely.

The author’s note was very interesting as the author’s mother was diagnosing spectrum disorders way before so many others weren’t.
Quiet, entertaining and quick book to read! @jackiefriedland

The Shampoo Effect by Jenny Jackson was a great follow up to her debut novel Pineapple Street. This book deals with the making and breaking of adult friendships, the harsh realities when someone new joins the group and seeing your friends from fresh-eyed perspectives.

First of all, this was quote was posted and sent to me by another reader: β€œThe term β€˜Shampoo Effect’ describes how a tiny bit of extra shampoo on already-wet hair creates an outsized, instant lather. The characters use this as a metaphor for long-standing relationships and old friend groupsβ€”you never start from a clean slate because new feelings and drama are always built on top of old history.” I think it’s a great metaphor for the life they were living. So, if you were wondering what the title refers to, there you have it.

I really enjoyed Caroline and Van as a couple, and I do think it’s hard to be the new one in a friendship group. It was refreshing for Caroline, a NY character, to meet such a down to earth, sweet guy. It was jarring and surprising to find out that Van’s ex-girlfriend was pregnant. That situation presented a great plot point, that fed the storyline.
Overall, this was a good read to bring in your beach bag.

New Book Review:
Hollow Bones by Jodi Picoult was an incredibly compelling novel that is eerily timed into today’s headlines. I’ve been a huge fan of Picoult since her first book and there was only a short span in which I felt her books were becoming formulaic. Thankfully, that was a short stint, and she once again began writing about topics that make us think, learn and research more fully.

When I began reading the book and Lindsay Clancy was mentioned, I had no idea that she was a real person. With Clancy’s trial going on these past few weeks and the book hitting the stands today, the timing was impeccable! You can’t pay for marketing this good.

I loved the structure of the storytelling and welcomed seeing Jesse, the brother from My Sister’s Keeper as one of the main characters in the novel. That young little arsonist became a respected member of the police force. Loved the play of characters between books.

Learning about Post Partum Pyshchosis was so sad but equally interesting as I’d never heard of it. It made me horribly mad that women were often blown off as though Post Partum is just a normal part of life. Molly, Jesse’s wife, was a very well written character as her loss was hugely significant to the storyline of 9/11. This book offered so much…mother and daughter relationships, complicated family dynamics, age gap relationships, and post-partum psychosis were large plot lines of the book.

As always, Picoult added some fabulous plot twists that were surprising and seemed completely realistic to the story. This book, coupled with anyone who’s keeping up with the Clancy trial, will make for an incredible book club discussion. Highly recommend! @jodipicoult #ballantinebooks @penguinrandomhouse by @goodbookfairy
