Today would have been her 55th birthday.

I didn’t have a happy childhood, but the fond memories i have, include my mom and brothers. We supported each other when no one else did and we have an unbreakable bond that I value and cherish everyday. My brothers have been there for me when no one else has. They have supported me, and shown up for me in ways that I couldn’t for myself at times. My mom taught us that.

My mom was an amazing writer and she wrote a manuscript. She wrote a lot of things that I still can’t read to this day. She was in a lot of pain and suffered quietly for many years, all while raising three kids on her own.

My moms name was Flor Estrella “Flower Star” and she really was a beautiful flower and a bright, shining star. She would pour all her love onto me and let me sleep in her big bed and watch movies and skip school if I was feeling sad and we’d go thrifting and read books all day at the library, she would listen to audio cassettes in the car about learning Arabic, Portuguese, French…she fully taught herself how to read, write, and fluently speak Italian.

She would go to the Buddhist temple and do yoga and listen to Deepak Chopra and write letters to Wayne Dyer and Maya Angelou. She would talk about concepts involving mental healing and higher powers and I think about these conversations now and I see that she was setting me up for life. I am the heir to her wisdom.

My mom always told me she wasn’t going to be around for a long time and that really sank into my psyche. Because I knew this, I was always scared of losing my mom even when I was a child. My entire world revolved around my beautiful mother.

I wish my mom was alive. Fifteen is too young to lose your best friend and biggest supporter. But I’d like to think that she’s around and supporting me in small, quiet ways. She lives through me and my brothers. I know she’d be happy to see the relationship we have built with each other. She was the foundation for that.

I never want to go a single day without remembering how wonderful my mom was.
