Founded in a Balmain boat shed in 1987, the consultancy has grown to more than 80 designers and engineers across Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle. D+I is now part of Capgemini.

Murray has been awarded the 2026 Australian Design Prize, a Special Accolade recognising an individual designer's significant contribution to Australian design over the course of their career.

We sat down with Murray to talk about the boat shed, designing for the bottom of the Mariana Trench and why every product starts with research and has to be designed for manufacture.

“If you've got limited resources and limited power, you need people to want to do things with you.”

Bonnie Shaw has spent almost 30 years working across urban design, games, technology and public policy. As Chief Innovator and MAVlab Lead at the Municipal Association of Victoria and Director of MANY&FEW, she brings people together to tackle complex challenges through design.

Through MAVlab, Bonnie works with all 79 Victorian councils to share knowledge, pool resources and find collective solutions to challenges that would overwhelm any one council alone.

Bonnie is the recipient of GDA's 2026 Women in Design Award, the Special Accolade recognising women who have made notable contributions to the design industry and encouraging more diverse and equal representation across design and creative spaces.

We sat down with Bonnie to talk about designing systems rather than objects, why joy has a place in serious work and what designers can learn from the pathfinders of Arctic expeditions. Oh, and how to throw a better party!

“It failed, failed, failed until it started to succeed.”

That’s Fred Blochlinger, Founder and Managing Director of @outerspace_design, on one of the studio’s projects. It’s also a fair summary of how they work: every idea is tested and challenged until it earns its place, and the loudest voice never wins.

Outerspace has been named the 2026 Good Design Team of the Year, the Special Accolade for a team that performs at the highest level in the Australian Good Design Awards and has built a design-led culture across its whole organisation.

We sat down with Fred and Christian Tucker, Head of Design, to talk about productive friction, being prepared to fail, and the shared language that lets designers and engineers work as one.

“The problem was really simple to describe, but incredibly difficult to solve: people living in apartments were largely missing out on rooftop solar.” — Stella Knorr, Chief Product Officer at @allumeenergy, on where SolShare began.

One shared rooftop system now delivers solar directly to up to 15 apartments, and residents keep their existing meter and electricity retailer.

With more than 13,000 apartments now connected, SolShare has taken home two of our highest honours this year, the 2026 Australian Good Design Award of the Year and the 2026 Good Design Award for Sustainability.

We sat down with Stella to talk about designing the whole system rather than just the device, and why access to clean energy has a very immediate human impact.
