Bonobo by You-Jeong Jeong (translated by An Seon Jae) 🦍🎒🍍🌿 | ARC review

Literary fiction • Speculative fiction • Translated

READ THIS IF YOU…
♡ love translated Korean fiction
♡ like a strange book with a heartfelt message
♡ enjoy books that explore our relationship to the natural world

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
After a severe car accident, a primatologist wakes to find her consciousness trapped inside the body of a rescued bonobo! Desperate to return to her former self, she forms an alliance with a homeless man who may be her only chance of putting things right.

MY THOUGHTS
It took a little time for me to get used to the writing style of this one, which might just be down to the translation. However I’m very much glad I stayed with it because as well as being a weird premise, it also ended up being very profound and had me tearing up by the end! Bonobo explores pretty big themes of life, death, our relationship to the natural world and respect for autonomy. I ended up feeling quite attached to Jini (and Genie) and was really rooting for them! The ending was heartbreaking but so beautiful and will stay with me for a long time.

Pub date: 13th October 2026.

Thanks so much to @netgalley and @honford_star for the opportunity to read this arc!

Cream by Jamie Juggs 🍦🪼🐄⛱️ | ARC review

Horror • Queer

READ THIS IF YOU…
♡ love weird and I mean WEIRD books
♡ enjoy extreme erotica
♡ want to question your choices and think WTF did I just read

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
After an x-rated stream leaves Zac the talk of Blue Shore (and the object of everyone’s fantasies) he just wants someone to like him, for him. So, when he starts working at the ice cream stand with his crush, Jake, he can’t believe his luck. This isn’t your usual ice cream though - each flavour is laced with magical properties that have different effects.

MY THOUGHTS
Well damn… I can quite honestly say I’ve never read anything like that before. Now I usually love a weird/unhinged/fever-dream book, and there’s a part of me that was entertained enough to finish it (or at least morbidly curious to see where things would go next because there was absolutely no telling the direction) but wow this really was something and idk what to make of it 🤣

The laws of physics and logic just didn’t apply to this world and I had a hard time wrapping my head around what was/wasn’t possible, as more and more insane things would be introduced with no real explanation. Fyi this one is very graphic on many levels so if you’re squeamish you probably won’t like it. I will say, the author clearly has a VIVID imagination and is very creative because I have no idea how you’d come up with this stuff lol.

Unfortunately this didn’t really work for me. There was some interesting commentary on parasocial relationships and how people online can become products to be consumed. But I think there were just too many things going on to explore anything properly and too much added just for shock factor alone.

Thanks to @netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review. Pub date: 1st October 2026.

The Unhaunting - Micaiah Johnson 🦋👻🏚️🔪🌻 | ARC review

Southern Gothic • Horror

READ THIS IF YOU…
♡ love atmospheric southern gothic horror and haunted house stories
♡ don’t mind a slowww burn (with the story, not romance fyi😅)
♡ enjoy books that explore race, class and privilege

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
When Shantell’s best friend, Avery, inherits an old house in rural Mississippi, she agrees to move in and help fix it up. Dealing with severe anxiety and trauma, Shantell isn’t overly optimistic but is surprised to find herself content for the first time in a long while. That’s until ghosts start appearing and she starts to enquire about the houses history.

MY THOUGHTS
The Unhaunting is a quiet, atmospheric and eerie read. It’s such an original and unique take on the haunted house trope - the writing is also so gorgeous and I found myself highlighting so many passages! I love how the house was used as an allegory for racial injustice, privilege and generational trauma.

Johnson also did a really great job at blending supernatural horror with real history and I really enjoyed seeing the references to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. This was definitely a slow burn, and you have to be patient for the pieces to fall into place, but it really pays off imo!! A must-read for southern gothic horror and haunted house lovers. I haven’t seen anyone else talking about this one yet so I hope it gets the hype it deserves!

Pub date: 29th September 2026.

Three for Thursday (ARC reviews) 🩷💛

#bookreview #bookrecs #arcreview #netgalley #threeforthursday

Buzzard - Inez Ray

In 2086, corporations are monitoring fertility, abortion is illegal, and the last woman alive who can perform the procedure is in hiding. We follow Mae’s story as she recounts her time as a nurse in a special private prison, when impossible pregnancies start occurring in her patients. Wow this one hit hard! Some parts were genuinely difficult to read - not only because of what happens but because of how poignant it is in today’s world. It explores governmental surveillance/control and bodily autonomy. A scary depiction of where we’re headed...

Pub date: 22 September 2026.

Thanks so much @netgalley and @bindery_books for the arc in exchange for the honest review.

Female Life on Planet Earth - Laleh Khadivi

After her mother passes away, Heti is shocked to learn about her mother’s secret, violent past. This leads Heti to question how well she truly knew her, and turn towards other women, listening to their stories. I thought the writing was beautiful and I loved the last section when all of the women are together discussing their history/heritage as Iranian women. I found myself less engaged in the other chapters leading up to it, but still really appreciated the exploration of womanhood, grief and identity.

Pub date: 22 September 2026.

Thank you @netgalley and @oneworldpublications for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

Joan of The Arcane - Alexandra Fleder

With both kids out of the house and a marriage on the rocks, Joan turns towards conspiracy theories for something to focus on. This one held a lot of promise for me but unfortunately it didn’t fully deliver. I found the tone hard to pin down - I assumed it was going to be a satire but I felt like it took itself quite seriously. The writing was also very over-described at times which made it hard to follow. I did enjoy the female friendship aspect though and the delusional, obsessive nature of the fmc.

Pub date: 11 August 2026 (out now!)

The Honeys - Ryan La Sala 🐝🍯🏕️🩸 | Book review

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

Horror • Thriller • Queer

READ THIS IF YOU…
♡ enjoy characters that express gender fluidity
♡ love a creepy summer camp setting with culty vibes
♡ like weird and disorientating stories

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
When Mars’ twin sister, Caroline, dies in suspicious and horrific circumstances, they are determined to find answers. They decide to attend Aspen, the prestigious summer camp Caroline loved to attend each year, to get closure.

MY THOUGHTS
The Honeys is a very dreamy and unsettling read. I really loved Mars as a character and enjoyed the exploration of gender identity - Mars identifies as genderfluid and we see how attending the summer camp creates a lot of friction, especially with the binary of girls/boys living quarters and activities.

I thought it was so relatable with how it handled grief - the small reminders of Carloline at Aspen makes Mars feel like “she is everywhere, and nowhere.” I think that feeling is so accurate for anyone who has lost someone. It’s definitely on the slower side and I would’ve loved it if we’d had more of the reveal/action earlier in the book, rather than packing it all in the last 20%.

Serenity Falls - C.J. Tudor 🍦🌞🏡🛶 | ARC review

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Mystery • Thriller • Horror

READ THIS IF YOU…
♡ enjoy mysterious storylines slowly twist together
♡ love The Truman Show and Hot Fuzz
♡ like creepy, unsettling books that give off an uncanny valley vibes

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
When Dan and his daughter Sadie inherit a huge house in the perfect neighbourhood, they can’t believe their luck. However, their new beginning is upended when they discover a dead body in their swimming pool! This grim discovery uncovers abandoned homes, a decades-old mystery, and dark secrets.

MY THOUGHTS
I thought C.J. Tudor did a great job at creating such an eerie atmosphere and I felt so immersed in the hot summer setting. It reminded me a lot of The Truman Show and Hot Fuzz, so if you enjoy stories set in small towns that have uncanny valley vibes then you’ll probably enjoy this one!

There were a lot of different POVs from different timelines so it got a bit confusing at times and I felt that the characters voices could have been more distinct from each other. Some of the twists were also a bit predictable, but still a fun and entertaining summer read!

Thanks so much to @netgalley, @michaeljbooks and @penguinukbooks for the arc in exchange for my honest review. Serenity Falls will be released 10th September 2026!
