For more than 30 years, Shavonte Zellous has watched her mother live with multiple sclerosis.

She watched her fight through pain. She watched her keep showing up. And when basketball took Shavonte around the world, her mother kept finding a way to be there.

“Mama’s gonna cheer you on. Regardless if I’m at home or in the crowd.”

Now, after a career in the WNBA, @szellous1 is thinking about what comes next — and how she can use the platform basketball gave her to give back to the MS community.

Baseball has taught me some of life’s biggest lessons — discipline, resilience, and how to keep showing up no matter the challenge.

That’s why I’m giving back through my youth baseball camp with @stmayouthbaseball. It’s about more than the game — it’s about helping kids build confidence, character, and belief in themselves both on and off the field.

I’ve learned that resilience grows when you’re surrounded by people who believe in you and support you. That’s the kind of community I want to help bring to the next generation.

Baseball has opened so many doors for me — it’s where I learned discipline, teamwork, and how to bounce back when things get tough.

Now, I want to give that same opportunity to the next generation through my baseball camp. The camp isn’t just about playing the game — it’s about building the community and instilling confidence and resilience in the youth.

Growing up, I loved STEM — math, problem-solving, and analytical thinking. But it wasn’t always easy. I had a teacher who challenged me and showed me that if you put in the reps, just like in sports, you’ll improve.

When I was a kid, there was a moment when my mom said, “I think you’re going to have to stop playing.”

Soccer had become too expensive, and I almost had to give up the sport that would eventually become my career. The only reason I was able to keep going was because of the support of my family—and a coach who stepped in to cover the costs.

That support changed my life. It’s why I’m proud to support @playworksrecess, an organization making sure every kid has the opportunity to play, belong, and grow.

Play teaches confidence, teamwork, and resilience. Every kid deserves that.
