A while back I was out with some friends and there was someone who’d occasionally frequent the restaurant that I hadn’t seen in awhile. We were playing catchup and landed on the topic of the restaurant. He’s a white German guy and I asked what he thought would make us resonate with a broader German audience. He said, “you have incredible food, the staff lights up the room and the place is warm and welcoming, but you aren’t cool. You have no edge.” I remember freezing on that comment; it really irritated me but in the moment, I didn’t know why.

Just recently while preparing some reflections on Black History Month, this comment popped back into my head and I realized that I’ve heard that comment my whole life from people who didn’t look like me. You see, that comment wasn’t indicating some tangible action steps like “improve your instagram or train your staff;” this was coded language (intentional or not) that we Black folks often confront which is: WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO CONSUME YOU AND THEREFORE DON’T SEE YOUR VALUE.

Growing up, especially in a Black church, there were adults, who’d every so often pull you aside and give you a little piece of candy, Werther’s Originals or Peppermints most likely. They’d give you that candy, ask you how you are doing and tell you how proud they are of you. These adults collectively wanted to make sure that us little Black children felt loved, acknowledged and that this acceptance was unconditional.

At Love Deluxe, we affirm our Black History through the idea that we are not here to consume each other. You can buy the food but you can’t purchase the spirit in the food. That’s for free; we share that with love. The warmness and the smile you receive is not because you are going to spend money; it’s because we share the same space and you belong here.

At the bar in the restaurant, we have some candy displayed. It’s used for our cocktails but more often than not customers or their children will eye that candy and they’ll ask: “are these for sale?” and we’ll say: “No they are not, but you can still have one.”

Searching through some old emails with my business partner, one unexpected thread titled, “New Ting”, popped up. Sent on December 28, 2022. What better way to reflect on the new year than to examine where you were just a few years back.

In November of 2022, I had just closed my first restaurant venture. In many ways, it felt like the end of the world. I was exhausted, my savings were depleted, the marketing industry from which I came had passed me by, and what was left of my little ego would be bruised over and over as I had to explain to what seemed like everyone that my business failed and I had no plan to move forward.

The hardest conversations were those with friends and family who invested in me. I felt I had let them down. I would pick up the phone and I would explain that we decided to close down the business. And then I would brace myself for the disappointment that was sure to come. It never came. The criticism never came. The blame never came. These people met me in this moment with love and encouragement and support. I thought my actual human value was wrapped up in selling tacos and I recognized through their response that real value comes from care, compassion and the courage to move forward.

To make a long story longer, Eddy and I met up in December 2022 to bounce some food ideas. We both were looking for the “new ting.” After our meeting I had proposed that we worked together on a call.

She said no.

I’m glad she did because it made me recognize that I really wasn’t looking for a partner. I was looking for help. I needed help and my ego wouldn’t let me ask for it.

Well on December 28th 2022 I asked for help. Eddy met me at that moment. She embraced my vulnerability and kicked off the adventure we call @lovedeluxe_berlin by @goodluck_bra

My brother and i grew up in a baptist church of matriarchs. These were strong, accomplished, loving Black women who cultivated a space for their children and other children to grow, learn, and love. In those times, we spent hours at the church — choir practice, after school programs, summer programs, dance programs — day after day, week after week. As kids, we only saw the surface — these committed women with deep faith who tried to instill that faith in us.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve recognized the deeper purpose in all of this. Why they invested so much time in us. These women recognized that despite who we were as people the world may never love and appreciate us. These women wanted to make sure that the children who came through these church doors understood the powerful, transformative feeling of being loved.

We felt it everyday.

To this day these Queens continue to ask about us, give us hugs and kisses when we see them, and share with glowing smiles how proud they are of us.

Reflecting on this important day, I want to honor these women by renewing my commitment to create a world where women and girls are valued. That they feel loved, acknowledged and respected. That whoever they may be is enough and we cherish you.

Big up to @runmindful and @timothyallenolson for hosting such a magical weekend. This weekend fell on my 1 year anni of being in Berlin. When I left nyc who knew what was going to happen. It was the start of a new adventure; one that has changed me forever and brought so many new wonderful people into my life. I am so grateful and can’t wait to see what’s next.
