It is hard to find the words for a song written from a tragedy that took place seven summers ago. To address one's former life and confront it is a daunting task. But for my dearly missed friend, and the others lost along the way since, for once I must try.

Going into the summer of 2019, my friend Julian and I were preparing to fly out to Memphis to cut a record. On one of those days, just as I was getting home from working my shift at the pub, I was hit with some of the worst news I have ever heard. My former bandmate, roadie, and one of the earliest friends I had made as a young teen in the punk scene had ended his own life.

A state of shock had glazed over me. I knew little else to do but smoke my habitual spliff on the porch, and while I sat there, a song fell out of me. At the time, I had spent most nights crashing on my friend Phil's couch. After work, I'd know he was around by the light of the upstairs being left on. Even if he wasn't there at the moment, his window was a safe place to smoke and unwind. In that moment, that light became a symbolic refuge for the words that spilled out of me.

Going into our first day of tracking these songs, I was numbing myself, doing everything to go about business as usual. The song I had just scribbled down on my porch, I wasn't even really quite sure was going to be one to attempt on the session. But, the melody came to mind, and I had the opportunity to deliver it with the legendary Jimbo Mathus on the keys to back me up. What you are hearing on this track is the first take we cut that day. Right away, we could tell it was the keeper. As the song unfolded, an outpouring of grief exploded as tears filled my eyes in the vocal booth.

This one remains hard for me to hear. It is a painful reminder of a wound that time could never heal. To my friends still living who I haven't seen since Devin passed, I am sorry for lacking the strength to come around anymore. Nonetheless, this track is dedicated to Devin Brough, a good friend to all. Not a day goes by that I don't miss you, and for that matter, I would also like to dedicate this song to all those fallen.

Seven summers since this session passed, and what can I say?

Life has been a fever dream.

This song comes from a fragile moment—the final rally of youth before several years plunged into the abyss.

Julian and I flew into Memphis in July of 2019 to meet Bronson, who drove us down to spend our week cutting a record at his former studio in Water Valley, Mississippi. We laughed, cried, and danced into the rain together in the moments before I realized my life was flying off the rails.

Shortly after this session, I'd be checking myself into in-patient rehab and struggling with heavy loss, confusion, buried by depression.

It's hard knowing where to begin in explaining these early sessions, but to tell the tale of these lost years, I want to start with the collaborative moments of inspiration and friendship found before the bough breaks.

What you are hearing is the final moments of my youth, a testament to an era left behind, written in the dreamland of highway vultures.
