Little Chef. Future Chef 👩🏼‍🍳

I found this old school photo of myself some time ago and had to laugh. Apparently the signs were already there!

I’ve spent almost my whole adult life in kitchens, and I don’t think I understood when I started just how much being a chef would shape me. Not just professionally, but personally.

It teaches you incredibly high standards. To notice everything, and to anticipate what might go wrong before it does. To take responsibility (sometimes more than you should). To keep pushing when you’re tired (when sometimes, really, you shouldn’t). And somewhere along the way, it becomes more and more difficult to switch those things off.

I’ve been thinking a lot about mental health lately. About expectations, pressure, the inability to accept praise, and how one unhappy or disappointed guest can somehow occupy more space in your head than a dining room full of happy ones.

This little girl obviously had no idea what was ahead of her. Or that one day the food she made would receive recognition she could never have imagined, but that she would somehow struggle to believe she deserved it.

Someone said something really lovely to me this weekend about our recent awards, and my immediate reaction was to downplay it. To make myself smaller. And I regretted it almost as soon as I’d said it, and I’ve been wondering why I keep doing it.

Is it years of professional conditioning, where there is always something wrong, something to improve, someone better? Where being a good chef so often means being able to see your own mistakes before anybody else does? Or is it because, over the years, there have always been people in the industry willing to say that what I do is average. Nothing special. Not worth the hype.

And somehow, these are the voices I choose to believe.

Even after receiving recognition I genuinely never imagined we would, I still find myself looking for reasons it might not be deserved.

Stock flowers 🩷🌸

Almost feels a little cruel ... months of waiting, and then just a single (but oh so beautiful) bloom per plant. Or maybe that's exactly what makes them so special. by @goodtogather
