During our road trip along Portugal’s west coast, we stayed at @casa_quintas in Barril a beautifully restored villa surrounded by vineyards, rolling hills and the Atlantic Ocean. Mornings started with homemade breakfast prepared by the hosts, followed by slow afternoons by the pool and walks to the nearby beach. Peaceful, thoughtfully designed and full of charm, it was one of those places that instantly made us feel at home.💛 by @goodtravel.eu

Sustainable forestry and tourism: 5 accommodations with sustainable forestry🌲

Our forests are under pressure — from drought, pests, and decades of monocultures. Sustainable forestry is changing that: mixed forests, careful timber harvesting, and leaving space for nature to recover. And some of our favourite places to stay are part of exactly that story.

1. Hafsrød, Norway - @hafsrod  A fifth-generation forestry estate in Østfold with three cabins for guests. Through sustainable management, the forest’s CO₂ absorption has increased by 50% over the past 20 years. Stay in the former woodcutters‘ cabins and hike through the estate’s own woodland.

2. Himmelreich Chalets, Germany - @himmelreichchalets  Two cozy chalets in the Bavarian Forest, built entirely from wood out of the family’s own forest. The Koller family has managed their woodland for generations and shares that knowledge on guided forest tours.

3. Schloss Neuenhof, Germany - @schlossneuenhof  A historic castle estate in the Sauerland with a holiday apartment in the outer bailey. The Bussche family practices PEFC-certified forest management on the castle grounds — one of the most natural forms of forestry there is.

4. Gut Nehmten, Germany - @gut_nehmten  A traditional estate on Lake Plön in Holstein Switzerland, where ancient trees, wooded areas, and hunting grounds make the forest an integral part of daily life. Explore it all on the estate’s own walking and hiking trails.

5. Moosham 13, Germany - @moosham13  A historic farmstead near Grafenau in the Bavarian Forest, where the wood from the family’s own forest ends up directly in the untreated floors of the holiday apartments. The forest stays in the regional cycle — and so do you. 🌿

@gandum.village is a boutique hotel set on a 14-hectare farm in Montemor-o-Novo, less than an hour from Lisbon.💛

The regenerative farm supplies many of the ingredients used for breakfast and the farm-to-table restaurant, which focuses on local, seasonal produce and offers plenty of vegetarian options. There’s also a coworking area, plus guided agroforestry tours, visits to local wineries and wellness activities.
