Since everyone is talking about 2016 I figured I’d chime in. That year I decided to rent out an old paint factory on the corner of Adelaide and Portland (RIP to that building / thumbs up to condo developers) and filled it up with a bunch of vintage vendors. This was back when you could rent a 2000+ sqft space for $1000 😆. The goal was to create an IRL shopping experience where local vintage vendors could sell their gear during the historically slow e-comm months. Me and a couple buddies sat down and drew up the plans for @thedeadstockdepot and executed on it without hesitation. Fast forward to our second event and I was actually flabbergasted to see that there was a line up at the door. Fast forward a couple more events and we are seeing people from the states and even as far as Japan and Australia travel to Toronto just for our event. We eventually would go on to have big corporate brand sponsorships on our events like Tommy Hilfiger and Adidas, and I’m lucky to say that we were able to travel with this event to cities like NYC and LA. Truly one of my proudest accomplishments. Didn’t know it at the time but we were seriously creating a moment in history with this project. We were the stepping stone for the majority of the events you see scattered across Toronto now of days (again, also across the world). Many of today’s markets are hosted by people who were once our vendors. Going into COVID we had plans to bring the business to the next level with massive collaborations, which I won’t dive into, but those got shut down for obvious reasons. Coming out of the pandemic the industry was far too saturated and me and my business partners had too many things going on in our lives to continue hosting these events, but it all started in the year 2016. I went on to co-found @relocationtoronto and that would have never happened if I didn’t make the moves I made that year. by @googlechromeboy

“It’s not what we use, it’s why”. Three years clean today and eternally grateful to god for allowing me to wake up on this day three years ago and make the decision that enough was enough, for good.

I wasn’t going to do the whole long-winded caption shit but someone might need to hear it. In early December of 2022 I found myself aimlessly walking the streets after a blackout with a feeling of “I can’t keep doing this to myself” so strong that I knew an end was near. The truth is though that death felt more possible to me than a life without drugs and alcohol. I used to tell myself all the time, “this isn’t going to end well”, and I truly believed I was going to end up flatlined in an ER room, or behind the wheel, or in jail from something worse.

I remember on that day in December I was sitting at the entrance of Trinity Bellwoods and I called my mom because I didn’t know who else to call. My words struggled to come out through my tears. “…Mom, I have a drinking problem”. That was the first time I ever admitted it out loud. Later that day I found myself calling rehab facilities, and eventually landed at the front doors of CamH. They offered to put me on drugs but my brain was already fried from years of abusing uppers, pharmaceutical sleeping pills, psychs, and alcohol. I didn’t see how more drugs would help, so I left.

I went on to attempt sobriety on my own. I white knuckled the entirety of that December, up until New Year’s Eve. “Bro just have one drink with me when the ball drops”. That’s all it took. I specifically remember thinking in my head “I shouldn’t do this”, yet there I was convincing myself I had it under control.

I woke up three days later and I had burned my life as I knew it to the ground. I was genuinely very afraid that I was going to commit suicide.

I didn’t know what to do. Then I remembered two very good friends of mine who had long term sobriety and had been offering help for years. So I called them and said I was finally ready. I was so fucking desperate that I had finally opened my mind. They took me to my first 12 step meeting that day and I haven’t used since.

If you’re struggling today, just reach out for help. by @googlechromeboy
