This happened not 10 minutes after being picked up from the airport for a weekend hike into the Grand Canyon. I heard the car at the same time that I saw it. It was going at least 60mph and probably much faster. I shouted, and in that split second before impact, Rose braked. That split second meant that I didn't feel the full brunt of the car slamming directly into my door, that I didn't end up with multiple broken bones, or worse, dead. Instead, the car made impact at the front tire.

The cops told Rose and Jessica that we were lucky to walk away from this. Most of that is probably because her car is (was) a little tank. Heavy and low to the ground, Rose's car lifted on impact, but didn't flip. It just spun around a few times. The front and side airbags and crumple zones further minimized the impact. If we were in an older car without these safety features, we probably wouldn't have walked away.

After the spin stopped, I collected myself and confirmed that Rose and Jessica were okay. Then I got out of the car and hobbled to the other car, not recognizing how much pain I was in. I wanted to be sure that driver was okay even though it was his fault that he hit us. Weird, but that's how my brain works. He was out of his car already and walking around as if nothing happened. I asked, "Are you drunk?" He said no.

I couldn't stand anymore. The pain in my knees was too great. I went to sit in the car and asked Jessica to get a photo of the other driver's license plate. She did, and she smartly told him to sit and stay where he is until the police show up.

After I was already on the way to the hospital, the cops came. They arrested the driver. He was drunk. They confirmed on video that he blew through a red light.

We all got lucky. Because of where I was seated, I got the most damage. The doctor says I probably have a torn MCL, a ligament that runs along the inner knee, so walking will be a challenge for some time. That means no hiking in the Havasupai Reservation this weekend. That will have to wait for another day. I'm just glad I'm okay and still in pretty good spirits. Hopefully I'll recover quickly. taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico by @gophilipgo

I met Stefan on a walking tour in Bushwick. Then I introduced him to Richard on a walking tour in East Harlem. Then Richard, Stefan, and I did a two-week walking tour in Italy. I first visited Berlin in 2019. I fell in love with it immediately. When I got back to the states, I requested and received approval to work remotely from there for 3 months during the spring of 2020. Then covid happened. When I went back two weeks ago, I wondered if I would feel the same about the city. I did. I could easily live there. I love the vibe and the people. It reminds me of a much more humble NYC with its multiculturalism, incredible art and food scenes, and very progressive ideology.

On my visit this time, I branched outside the touristy areas and wandered aimlessly around neighborhoods mostly filled with local residents. I especially liked Charlottenburg, where a friend I made in my 2019 visit lives. She had me over for a nice German dinner that wasn't German at all, except for the fact that she's German and made it. (Her boyfriend hates authentic German food.) After, we had drinks at a local bar. I drank too much and later caught the U-Bahn home, rather drunk, at the station depicted in this photo. I guess I have prettier photos from Berlin, but this is my favorite because it feels the most like Berlin to me.

I love a good storm. I often ponder whether or not it would be weird to post a video of a storm on my feed. I think about it for weeks at a time. It consumes me so much that I sometimes can't sleep. Then the worry goes away and another storm comes with another video taken, and I worry again, "Am I weird for wanting to post this video on Instagram?" I finally realized that's not why I'm weird.
