Circular breathing looks like magic—but it’s a skill you can actually build.

I’ve put together answers to the most common questions + I’m preparing a full course (coming July) with everything I know:
– circular breathing
– multiphonics
– amplification & effects
– jazz tuba concepts
– real-world gig + studio experience

Here’s how tuba sounds with three very different microphones.

An ElectroVoice RE20, a reference broadcast mic, loved by double bass players. The bass roll-off switch is set to low cut. Placed on a mic stand with the capsule 15 cm (6in) from the bell, off-center.

A DPA 4099, THE workhorse for acoustic amplification. The circuitry in the connector includes a low cut filter - I had it custom removed. Similar placement as the RE20, but clipped on.

A Shure SM58 - indispensable! I just dipped it straight into the bell :)

For this fun experiment, I wanted to test how each of these behaves in a live setting. So I hooked up all three to my tuba and blasted loud funk from my studio monitors. Here are the results. Listen on headphones or good speakers.

EV RE20: great sounding, captures high-frequency detail.

DPA 4099: for me, the best of all three. You can feel more punch than with the RE20. Plus, you can move (or jump) around! Remember, the RE20 has low cut switched on and the 4099 is modified for more bass frequencies.

SM58: While you can hear the band in both the RE20 and the DPA, this one only records tuba. Really strong subs! But it sounds muffled.

Each one is great for a certain situation - studio, acoustic band or heavily amplified music. Which one is your choice? Let me know!
