Slug of the Day: Costasiella sp The Banana Nudi

A very odd member of the Costasiella family and apparently very rare.

This pair was found at Melasti last month when I was diving with my daughter @yannicsmith

Sea Slug Saturday: Micromelo sp

During the end of March 2026 we came across dozens of these, most of which I didn’t see 🤣

The ones I did see were 5-10mm, but my daughter spotted more that were even smaller.

Trying to photograph them was another challenge, not just because of their size, but due to the speed that they moved.

Nudi of the Day: Glossodoris cinta

These are really chunky Dorids, like bulldozers and on the move nothing stops them. In a current they just sit there, while you’re hanging on to your muck stick that’s buried 24cm into the sand, legs and fins at 45° to your torso while you try to get that shot!

They are large colourful nudis, reaching up to 60-70mm and are found all over the Indo-Pacific as well as the Red Sea.

Nudi of the Day: Carminodoris estrelyado aka the “fried egg” nudibranch

A member of the Discodorididae family

“Estrelyado” is actually the Tagalog word for “sunny side up” which is derived from the Spanish word “estrella” and hence the reference to fried eggs 😂

Slug of the Day: Costasiella kuroshimae

This is one of many “sheep nudis” found at Melasti in Tulamben, Bali.

Not officially a nudibranch, this slug family generally consume various types of green algae, more commonly the Vaucheria and Avrainvillea, grazing with their radular teeth and using the chloroplasts as a source of energy through solar power similar to some nudibranch species of the Phyllodesmium genus.

A fairly common species of the Chromodorididae family and like most of that family, it feeds on sponge.

Shrimp and Nudi combo

Two Emperor shrimp jockeys (Periclimenes imperator) riding a pair of Hypselodoris tyroni as they move across the black sand of Tulamben.

Who gets what out of this symbiotic relationship?

Protection from predators for the shrimp in return for keeping the nudi clean perhaps?

This little fella has managed to cut off the arm from a sea star to munch on for a few days.

Did you know that they start with eating the feet
Probably stops the arm running away 🤣
