When I was young if anyone had asked me what I wanted to become when I grew up, I would say “ I want to be a lawyer “ and when they asked me why, I would say things like “ if anyone looks for my Daddy’s trouble I would take that person to court “ or “I love arguing”or “I want to help the sick and the needy “(the usual things a child would say).
Growing into adolescence, where a major shift happens, the dream was still the same but the reason was uncertain. In university, it felt like I was reading law for the sake of fulfilling my childhood dreams, without understanding the depth of why I was studying it, nor what i was going to do with the degree in the future.
Law school was an eye-opener for me, the lessons did not solely come from the academics, but from the first hand experiences. I will always say, Law School is a full package (you experience everything; you’ll laugh, cry, be anxious, tired, stressed, and pressured as you try to balance your emotions with the academic demands that await you).
Post-law school (awaiting result era) was life-changing for me. There was something about this era that awakened the woman, my inner child would look up to and be proud of. It came with a renewed sense of confidence, Clarity, and purpose. I owe this transformation to both the deep self-reflection that comes after fully absorbing all the experiences in law school ( more like a side effect of law school), and the privilege of being given an opportunity to gain hands-on experience across different areas of legal practice. These experiences allowed me to explore the possibilities I had never fully considered, and nurtured the seed of interest that had long existed within me.
Being officially called to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, marks the completion of a significant chapter, and opening of a new one. Stepping into this new chapter, I’m willing to approach every challenge and lesson with clarity and hope, While embracing the opportunities and growth that lie ahead.
It would be inappropriate for me to write all this epistle without giving gratitude to whom it is due. by @goretti_esq
