Angkor, Cambodia.
Three temples, three moods. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument on Earth, built in the early 1100s and still a living temple today.

Ta Prohm, left almost exactly as it was found, with silk cotton trees growing straight through the stone. This is also the temple from Tomb Raider, where Lara Croft walked through these same root covered doorways. And Bayon, where 216 carved faces smile down from the towers.

Zoom in to see the church.

Víkurkirkja, Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland.

In June the lupines take over the hills around Vík, and the little white church with the red roof sits right in the middle of it. It was built in 1934 and it is the highest building in town for a reason.

If the Katla volcano ever lets go under the glacier, the meltwater flood comes through here fast, and Vík's evacuation plan is simple: everyone runs up the hill to this church. The town still runs practice drills to it.

The lupines are not even native. They were brought in from Alaska in 1945 to hold the loose volcanic soil together, and now they paint the south coast purple every summer.

Ancient Corinth, Greece.

Seven columns still standing after almost 2,500 years. I kept walking around them trying to get the scale. Photos do not do it justice.

The Temple of Apollo here was built around 540 BC. Only seven of its 38 columns remain, and each one was cut from a single block of limestone.

It is one of the oldest Doric temples in Greece. Corinth was one of the richest cities in the ancient world, and this place still feels like it knows it.

Mycenae, Greece.

This is the Lion Gate, the entrance to the citadel of Mycenae. Built around 1250 BC, it is the only surviving monumental sculpture of Mycenaean Greece. The lionesses have stood here for more than 3,200 years.

A short walk from the gate is the Treasury of Atreus, a beehive tomb whose dome was the largest in the world for over a thousand years, until the Pantheon.

Walk through that gate and you are on the same path the Bronze Age kings took. It is humbling.

Oia at its best.

Everyone photographs the blue domes, but what you are really looking at is the edge of a drowned volcano. This caldera was formed around 1600 BC when Thera erupted, one of the largest eruptions in recorded history. It buried Akrotiri, the Minoan city down the coast, in ash.

The two domes everyone photographs belong to Agios Spyridonas and Anastaseos. Get here early. By midday the lanes are packed and the light is harsh.
