We are delighted to welcome local artist Joseph Rowntree to Boyd-Dunlop Gallery.⁠

Joseph Rowntree is a hardworking emerging artist from Heretaunga, Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay, and we have been following his progression keenly. Recent works combine landscape and figurative elements described in painterly gestures with elements of abstraction. Rowntree's practice is all drawn from his experience of the world we live in here in Aotearoa. A unique awkward discomfort which is present in the storytelling and culture of Aotearoa. This is something Joseph feels able to comment on after spending over ten years working as a shearer and in the agricultural sector.⁠
His painting touches on the transiency and melancholy of working on the land alongside an emerging unique visual language.⁠

Joseph Rowntree graduated with a Bachelor in Creative Practice from the Eastern Institute of Technology in 2018 and has spent the years since honing his craft with near constant practice and consistent showings of work and is building an enthusiastic collector base for his paintings across Aotearoa. by @gorseinmyshoe

A Recently Refurbished Library reflects the shifting landscape, geological, historical, and social. The work considers the ways we move away from inherited, edited narratives toward stories that are more complete, more our own.

Themes of identity, exploration, and unease. Central tenets to my practice, are present as steady undercurrents.

Finished wall for @get_up_festival 2026
Massive thanks to @odjobsart , @lexpaulette , @ellierose.co.nz and all of the team for your hospitality!
Was such a honour to be involved, and have the opportunity to paint alongside some pretty rad peoples!
These guys put in a huge effort to bring a seriously epic and diverse range of contemporary urban art to New Plymouth, make sure to check it out if you’re in town.

This is my largest wall to date in this looser style and I’m pretty chuffed with the result.
It’s a bit scary putting work like this out there, it may not be for everyone, the process has a long ‘ugly’ stage so it makes for a vulnerable time, but that’s kinda the point.
Contextually it fits alongside my studio practice, I learnt a lot in the process and am looking forward to making many more!

We all know one. I’ve spent some chunks of time pretending to be this.
