Hi! Carmel here 👋, Supernatural’s founder (that’s pronounced car-melle, even though the caramel pronunciation is totally fitting in this context). For 6 years, me and a handful of very wonderful women have been working on a willy-wonka-vibes vision of baking - one that’s colorful, creative, plant-based and delicious, but avoids the cringy ingredients that are typically found in sprinkles, food colors, colorful chocolate, and frostings. We’re not here to pretend sugar doesn’t exist (we love it, we use it wisely) but we are exploring new ways to help chefs express their creativity without compromising the way they normally like to eat. Like sprinkles made with ingredients so clean, you can jazz up your kids lunchbox with abandon. Or rainbow baking chips that are vegan and vividly colorful, but only have 4 ingredients. Or even buttercreams that are shockingly bright (thanks, beta carotene!) but just as wholesome as one you’d make at home. We know that America is ready to ditch artificial colors and all the other weird stuff that makes its way into colorful food (and has been for awhile), but we also know that up until we launched, the healthier versions were sort of a sad trade off (not bragging — if you ever tried to buy natural sprinkles before 2017, you know what we mean). We have big plans for Supernatural. Some of these plans most definitely involve your next birthday cake. But the main plan is to create what you actually want (eyeball sprinkles, we hear you!). So please keep your requests, feedback, critique and everything else coming. Tell your favorite grocery store you want us on the shelf. Two weeks ago, Illinois became the most recent state to introduce legislature banning Red Dye #3, joining New York, New Jersey and California. The media coverage of the proposed ban has been overwhelmingly supportive, citing modern studies that formally correlate Red Dye #3 with negative health impacts that don’t seem to affect everyone, but certainly impact kids (specifically ones dealing with negative behavioral impacts of the dye). Most of these bans would grant about 3 years to companies currently using Red Dye #3 to make the switch, which thankfully, should be a lot easier to pull off thanks to advances in natural reds. But just because they can find a natural alternative to their old, synthetic red doesn’t mean it’ll be easy to work it into their existing production processes — which can often contain a fair amount of heat (still tough for natural reds) — or their packaging, which can expose the color to light (again, not the happiest environment for natural colorants). We’re delighted to see where this goes, and more excited to see how so much demand for natural reds fuels innovation, and creates even more natural reds we can use at home and in bakeries. Some cool stuff is already happening with mushrooms and algaes, and it’s really the best ever time to be in natural colors.
