Japan, Tokyo. Last summer, I spent a week in Tokyo trying to learn how to be a better photographer at the hands of the great @stevemccurryofficial and @eoloperfido. Today’s Notes from the Edge of the Earth (link in bio) is about the first part of that experience: meeting a personal hero, learning new and difficult things, imposter syndrome, fat magicians, and—most of all—learning to slow down and let the world occur around you. Abkhazia, Sokhumi. In 2016, I travelled to a place that doesn’t quite exist. Abkhazia has a flag and a capital city. It hosted a World Cup, sort of. It has been a port for multiple empires. And now it’s a bizarre little non-country wedged between Russia and Georgia, most of the place looking forlorn and abandoned. Turkey, Fethiye. Four years ago in that weird first summer of the pandemic when we all thought it was over and travel was briefly allowed again, @sarahwoodardtravels and I met up in Turkey to hike the first few legs of the magnificent Lycian Way. Spain, Barcelona. A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to get to combine my love of hack amateur portrait photography with my love of @newfatherhood and @farafield_uk, ie my two coolest Mancunian pals Kevin and Mark. Kevin is a rad dad writer and Mark is a rad clothing designer and they’ve teamed up on a line of rad clothes for dads with the @gooddads_club. #colours by @gough.drew

Japan, Osaka. This photo was taken on New Year’s Eve at the end of 2019, when the COVID pandemic was just a whisper coming out of China, before constant testing and vaccine passports were necessary to go anywhere. People lined up for hours to ring the bell at this temple or to wrap wishes around any available part of the expensive temple grounds. I drank beer and snacks in the queue. As the world starts to finally begin to feel open again, I’m starting to think about about the places I’ve travelled in the past two decades and those I’m most excited to return to. Spain, Canary Islands. This is not an #astrophotography photo, but was taken at an astrophotography workshop on La Palma. We stood on this ridge above the clouds for hours, necks craned skyward as the day faded and a crystal-clear night sky revealed itself. Learning a lot this week about night sky photography, light pollution, and how cold a tropical island can feel.
