New Research: The Science of Oyster Mushrooms 🧫🍄‍🟫🔬. A new 2026 scientific study is giving us another reason to appreciate these amazing fungi! Researchers studied 80 adults between the ages of 60 and 80 over a 12-week period. Participants who consumed oyster mushrooms four times per week showed improvements in certain memory tests, along with lower anxiety and negative mood scores compared to the placebo group! Even more interesting? The researchers used whole, edible oyster mushrooms, not just concentrated extracts! Last time, we met the Eastern Jack o’ Lantern, a poisonous orange mushroom that can turn dinner into a gastrointestinal nightmare. 😂 This time, we’re meeting something a little more ghostly! 👻 Amanita polypyramis! With its large white cap covered in pyramid-shaped warts, this mushroom looks like it belongs in a haunted forest. But here’s where things get spooky. It’s considered poisonous, and its exact effects on humans are still poorly documented. Symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain are suspected. 💀 The moral of the story? Apparently it’s spooky season in the forest too… I was out walking through the woods and stumbled across one of nature’s own little Halloween decorations,the Eastern Jack O’ Lantern mushroom. Bright orange, creepy looking, very festive… and also poisonous. 😂 These mushrooms can sometimes be mistaken for edible species like chanterelles, and eating one can turn your peaceful fall afternoon into a completely different kind of horror story. We’re talking nausea, vomiting, severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, weakness, and an all around terrible time. So consider this your spooky season reminder from the woods…if you don’t know exactly what a mushroom is, don’t eat it. Not “I saw one that looked like this on Facebook.” Not “Google Lens says it might be edible.” And definitely not “my cousin Jerry ate something orange once and he was fine.” 😂 Leave. It. Alone. That’s one of the things I love about foraging, though. The deeper you get into it, the more you realize how many mushrooms can look similar while being VERY different when it comes to whether you should actually put them on your plate. Enjoy the hunt, take pictures, learn as much as you can… just don’t let curiosity turn your kitchen into a horror movie.
