💧 Fontana Washhouse: a glimpse into Gozo’s past

Hidden in the heart of Fontana, this traditional washhouse dates back to the time of the Knights of St John. Its stone arches shelter natural springs where local women once gathered to wash their clothes.

Still used by some locals today, it remains a living piece of Gozo’s heritage. 🇲🇹

🇫🇷 Le lavoir de Fontana : un voyage dans le passé

Au cœur de Fontana, ce lavoir traditionnel remonte à l’époque des chevaliers de l’Ordre de Saint-Jean. Sous ses arches de pierre, les sources naturelles accueillaient autrefois les femmes du village venues laver leur linge.

Encore utilisé par certains habitants aujourd’hui, il reste un témoin vivant du patrimoine gozitan. 🇲🇹

🌵 A little taste of Gozo: the prickly pear

Have you noticed these colourful fruits growing on cactus plants all around the island?

Prickly pears are perfectly adapted to Gozo’s warm, dry Mediterranean climate, and from August to the end of September, they are at their best. Their bright colours can be spotted along country roads, fields and stone walls all across the island. ☀️

They can simply be enjoyed fresh, but are also traditionally used for jams, desserts and Bajtra, Malta’s famous prickly pear liqueur. You can even find them occasionally in local cocktails, adding a little taste of the island.

A simple fruit, but a small part of what makes Gozo so special. 💛

🌵 Un petit goût de Gozo : la figue de Barbarie

Vous avez déjà remarqué ces fruits colorés qui poussent sur les cactus un peu partout sur l’île ?

La figue de Barbarie est parfaitement adaptée au climat méditerranéen chaud et sec de Gozo. D’août à fin septembre, c’est sa saison, et ses couleurs vives se retrouvent le long des chemins, dans les champs et près des vieux murs de pierre. ☀️

On peut simplement la déguster fraîche, mais elle est aussi traditionnellement utilisée pour préparer des confitures, desserts et le Bajtra, la célèbre liqueur maltaise à base de figue de Barbarie. On la retrouve même parfois dans certains cocktails locaux, pour une petite touche fruitée.

Un fruit tout simple, mais une petite partie de ce qui rend Gozo si particulière. 💛
