CONGRATULATIONS: Today I want to recognize Edwin Raymond, a man who demonstrated extraordinary courage.

At a time when questioning the system could cost officers their careers, Raymond and 11 other officers stood up against practices they believed were unjust. They challenged the use of policing tactics that disproportionately impacted Black and Latino communities and spoke out against a culture that many were afraid to confront.

Standing up to a multibillion-dollar institution takes conviction. It takes integrity. It takes a willingness to put principles above personal comfort.

Imagine a system that targets half a million black and Latinos a year and you take a stance against those injustice. Example; student MetroCard time restriction removal helped stopped the targeting of our youth which was a pathway in putting our children into the system. Edwin spoke out about this, showcased his experience with this situation in the video clip above of his reenactment, that he states in his book. When people stand up a difference will be made.

What has always stood out to me about Edwin Raymond is that he cannot be easily bought, intimidated, or silenced. He is thoughtful, educated, deeply knowledgeable about history, and able to remain calm while addressing difficult issues of justice and accountability.

Those qualities are exactly why I believe he is the right person to serve as New York City’s Sheriff. Congratulations on your appointment. New York City is better served by leaders who are willing to stand for what they believe is right.

THE NEW YORK CITY SHERIFF EDWIN RAYMOND:
Congratulations to Edwin Raymond on becoming the new Sheriff of New York City.

Long before this appointment, Raymond built a reputation as someone willing to challenge injustice from within. His story is documented in the book An Inconvenient Cop “My fight to changing policing in America”, where he explains how his desire to improve relationships between law enforcement and minority communities due to the ill ways Black & Brown people was poorly treated, it inspired him to become a police officer in hope to change the system from within.

His fight for accountability was also featured in the documentary Crime + Punishmen (Hulu), which highlighted the efforts of 12 officers who spoke out against quota driven policing practices and sought reform within the NYPD.

It is difficult to deny the courage required to challenge multi billion dollar system from the inside and advocate for change.

Thank you, Sheriff Raymond, for your contributions to conversations about justice, accountability, and police reform. Congratulations on this new chapter of public service, and best wishes as you continue serving New Yorkers.

CONGRATULATIONS: What I admire most about Edwin Raymond is that his commitment to service extends far beyond law enforcement.

He helped create PLOT (Preparing Leaders of Tomorrow), a Brooklyn mentoring program that supports boys and young men ages 9–21, including at risk, incarcerated, and formerly incarcerated youth. Through mentorship, guidance, and community engagement, the program helps young people discover their potential and become leaders in their communities.

He has organized book drives that put positive and empowering stories into the hands of children books that teach civil rights history, celebrate diversity, and encourage young people to love who they are.

One story that particularly inspired me was learning that he kept care packages in his car containing hygiene products, food, socks, and other necessities for people experiencing homelessness. Instead of simply turning away, he looked for practical ways to help. That idea inspired me to do something similar, and it is something I continue to this day.

Congratulations to a man who has consistently worked to be a role model, mentor, activist, and public servant. Your impact reaches far beyond one badge, one title, or one position. Thank you for continuing to invest in our communities and in future generations.

Congratulations, Sheriff Raymond. 🎉

I MISS YOU ROMAN 🐈‍⬛: My Roman went to kitty heaven last year, my heart was sooo broken

I got Roman when he was only 3weeks old, i remember feeding him milk with a kitten-bottle 🍼

15years w. this amazing lil man

Got him in college / travel back-and-forth to Georgia & NYC with him on the plane, in cars, & a U-Haul

He played fetch, shook paw, and took walks with me outside down these Brooklyn streets. You couldn’t even walk in my house without greeting him, he was so friendly that people got cats after meeting him.

A very amazing kitty 😽🫶🏾
