Hello friends! Happy #thermalthursday !

Yesterday was Energy Efficiency Day, so today were looking at what energy efficiency looks like in building envelopes!

The building in the first thermogram is approaching Thermal Chic, with almost-uniform temperatures across surfaces, with just a few exceptions. Particularly, the projecting roof canopy at the corner of the building (an exciting design feature) is really well-done thermally, with very little thermal drama, and a lot of panache. Which is to say, that part of the building envelope is very energy efficient!

The projecting roof canopy in the second photo has a lot of thermal drama. The apparent air leakage through the joints between walls and canopy is not thermally chic or energy efficient. It even looks like this building may have some air leakage behind the metal panels, at a horizontal line just above the first floor.

What other energy efficiency related patterns do you see in these photos?

Any other thoughts on these?

What did you do for Energy Efficiency Day or the day after?

What happens when you bring a bunch of PHiends together in Texas? 🏡🛸

You get one seriously PHun space❗️

During Build Show Live, so many PHiendly PHaces came to check out the G-Pod and all the clever details packed inside. From off-grid systems to thoughtful design, this project is a great example of what’s possible when the whole building works together. You definitely need to check out this project, there’s a lot more PHun to discover! 🏡🔥

Hey Everybody! Happy #thermalthursday !

The first time Building Performance Architecture saw this thermal phenomenon was 17 or 18 years ago, when we were doing a lot of single-family home energy audits. But this time, it was in a 10,000 square foot, brick and stone mercantile/social hall building built during the gaslight era - with the original gas fittings still visible!

Turn two blower doors on and one of the floor joist cavities lights up in the infrared, with hot air from outdoors flowing through it like a duct. You could see it from below (first photo), and you could see it from above (2nd & 3rd photos).

Check out how hot it was on the upper floors! (See the temperature scales on the right edges of the thermograms.) Those levels were very lightly occupied, with no air conditioning, and inspected in the middle of summer. And yet the outdoor air pulled in through the joist cavity was still hotter than indoors, even when some of the air leakage at the baseboard (2nd image) was cooler than indoors.

If the IR scan was done in the evening (which it was), which side of the building do you think had the hole leading to the joist cavity? Why?

Let's hear your answers, and any other thoughts you have about these thermograms!

What happens when your living room decides to move outside? 🌿

Module 5 aka PHive 🖐🏻 of the G-Pod makes indoor-outdoor living feel almost effortless. The shaded, cozy exterior space includes a super-functional outdoor kitchenette, while the folding glazing system opens the interior living space directly to the outdoors.🛸🏡

Could you see yourself living this way? 🤔

Tell us what you’d use this space for and follow along to see the next G-Pod video

What do you get when you put PHive PHantastic modules together?

One seriously beautiPHul GPod! 🏡 ❌️PH❌️

The PHirst module brings together the office and sleeping quarters, while the second packs in the mechanical systems and two bathrooms. Modules three and four create the heart of the home with the kitchen and living room, complete with tons of seating and storage.

Do you think it’s beautiPHul?

Like and save this reel, then come back for the PHiPHth module, the covered exterior living room! 👍🏻📲

The G-Pod 💧🌧️ is a great example of how a holistic approach connects all the building systems together.

Rainwater from the roof, condensation collected from the exterior shell, and water produced by the dehumidification and fresh-air filtration systems are all directed into the same collection trough. That water flows into cisterns, where it’s stored before being filtered and pumped back into the G-Pod for reuse. It’s a clever closed-loop approach that captures water from multiple sources instead of letting it go to waste.

Just another amazing detail that makes the
G-Pod such a PHun, resilient, and resourceful off-grid system!
