The last 16.5 years have been a blessing but I had to say goodbye to Skyla the other day. She was my best friend and really the only family I had. I knew this day was approaching but nothing prepared me for the void I feel right now. It seriously feels surreal and the silence in my house is unbearably loud. I’ve never felt more alone and I don’t know what to do with myself if I’m being honest. She was the one constant in my life I knew I could count on being there and we shared so many amazing memories together. I gave her the best life I could and in return she was by my side for my entire 20’s and most of my 30’s. She taught me responsibility and kept me accountable. Sometimes I think I needed her more than she needed me so she held on for as long as she could. She’s been by my side for everything. Every holiday, birthday, break up, and new city since I got off the Grey Hound in 2005. I’ve been so fortunate to have had such an amazing dog. She never barked, never bit anyone, wasn’t destructive, was always down for a car ride, let me dress her in ridiculous costumes, wasn’t mad we celebrated her 3rd birthday 3 years in a row (oops), she never lost a tooth, never had a life threatening condition... old age just finally caught up with her. She did go through a lot over the last few years though and was so stoic and brave. Sky was in kidney failure stage II, but we kept it there for years. She had arthritis throughout her body, was incontinent, tore her CCL, ruptured her cornea, had vestibular syndrome twice, but nothing held her back. Everyone that met her adored her and everyone that watched us grow up together on social media always had the nicest words to say about her. I don’t know where all the time went, it feels like just yesterday I was sifting through the other puppies just to get to her. I will cherish all the memories, good and bad. She’s no longer in pain anymore so I know I made the right decision, but I miss her and her little piggy grunts and I know I’ll think about her everyday.
