It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Just wanted to say, I’m still here!
I’ve been extremely busy, but will be hopefully sharing more work soon. Had lots of fun doodling over this photo. I now have Procreate and I’m still learning how to get the most from it. However, it’s been amazing for amendments on final artwork and for sketching. I’m hoping to use it more in my work soon, once I get more confident!

🦦 💚 Just 48 hours left to bid on so many original artworks from wonderful illustrators, authors and celebrities in The Bookmark Project. These handmade artworks have been created to raise money for Katiyo Primary School in Zimbabwe. Past funds have provided electricity, built toilet blocks, purchased desks and benches, and constructed nursery classrooms.
Follow @slhattersley to find out more, I will also put a link in my stories to the auction.

I hope that Otter finds a happy home! 💚⭐️

🐻 Yesterday was World Bear Day 🐻. Yes, you read that right! So here’s another bear in case you wanted more on your feed. To be fair, they are very gorgeous creatures!

——

This was a great excuse to create an illustration quickly. I managed to go from sketch to final artwork in a couple of hours, which is rare for me! I was trying to minimise the overthinking I can do something when working on a piece of artwork. I always wanted to keep the looseness that comes with not overworking illustrations. Let me know if you think I managed to achieve it!

Also, tell me your favourite bear in the comments. I love the Spectacled Bears, they are called that because they look like they are wearing glasses!

🦭 Helping Hand 🌊

Went back and revisited a portfolio piece from (last year?) that I felt had legs but wasn’t quite right originally. I added more texture and contrast in the waves and made the colours more bold and less pastel. I’m trying hard to push away from pastel colours. They’re very much a comfort zone for me. I also redrew the eyes and repositioned the face of the child slightly as it was a bit off. I’m still getting to grips with this way of drawing humans and it’s never as effortless for me as drawing animals is.

This was created before as a representation of how my career as an illustration was back then. Sadly, I can still relate to it in some ways! However, I am more at peace with things than I was before. It’s not an easy career, it never has been and probably never will be! But like all things, it gets better when you have support. So as always, thank you.

Would love to know your thoughts on the updated version. Did you ever see the original artwork? Are you Team Seal? I’m always Team Seal!

🔥 🐴. Year of the FIRE HORSE 🐴 🔥. How cool does that sound!? I wanted to create an illustration that celebrated both the Chinese New Year and that this year seems to be a big year for international sports. I also wanted to keep up using more textures and graphic shapes in my illustration practice. For those who celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful Chinese New Year 🧧
.
Also, drawing sporty things is definitely new for me! There’s a football that didn’t make the cut, it just didn’t look right! What’s your favourite sport to play or watch?

🌟 PLR 🌟

If you follow many authors and illustrators, you will see very similar posts today where we all say thank you. Thank you to libraries, and thank you to those who use them! Also a huge thank you to PLR! PLR is incredible, and is like the equivalent of royalties to musicians when a song is played on the radio. Every time you borrow an author/illustrator/translator’s book from the library, they get a small payment. It’s wonderful. No, it’s not enough for me to retire and buy a yacht. But it does make a small financial difference, and the best feeling is seeing how many people have borrowed your books!

So thank you so much to everyone who borrowed my books from their library last year! Here were the two most borrowed titles from last year. The Egg wins every year 🥚, which does make me happy to see it’s still well loved.

Keep on reading, and keep using your wonderful libraries!

🚗 Driving into the new year! Beep Beep! 🚗

Inspiration was Richard Scarry meets 90s Toy Cars! Did you guys have the red and yellow car? It’s iconic! Just wanted to draw something for fun and to play with textures.

Toot Toot to 2026!
