Freedom is throwing your work! Last month 16 artists came together for our 5-day Mentor-in-Residence program, 𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙨 𝙈𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙙, led by acclaimed ceramic artist @gracehanclay. This participant-led intensive invited artists to meet clay with openness, embracing spontaneity and intuition while developing new techniques. When you sit at the wheel you intend to throw, but not throw on the floor. And yet, on the final day, participants engaged in a gesture perhaps only Grace would encourage. What might seem destructive became an act of liberation, a reminder that the creative process is as meaningful as the object itself, and that letting go can be its own form of making. My time @cretarome has been a chance to go back to throwing small vessels, something I hadn’t focused on for a while. Coming back to it felt like stepping into a quieter space, where the process holds my full attention and quiets the noise, both around me and within me.That sense of quiet found its way into the pieces, which led to the title of the exhibition, Contenere la quiete (Holding Quietness).#ceramics #vessels by @gracehanclay

@gracehanclay transforms the contemporary art spaces that her work is shown in. She creates at scales that are technically impressive and emotionally moving, whether in size, repetition, or theme. We are looking forward to welcoming Grace to 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒚: 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑪𝒂𝒏 𝑰𝒕 𝑩𝒆? on March 21.Grace Han is a ceramic artist who received her original training in Seoul, South Korea. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Dankook University, specializing in traditional Korean ceramic techniques and skills. Following the completion of her education, Grace further honed her expertise by working for several years in one of Korea’s largest ceramic companies, gaining invaluable experience that extended beyond the realm of academia. Having so much fun @gayacac in Bali with an amazing group of ceramic artists from all over the world!!❤️#Repost @gayacac with @use.repost・・・Is this a studio or a gym? Perhaps both— we are adapting to being beginners learning the traditional Korean techniques of Su-re-jil and Sseol-jil ways of throwing pots. @gracehanclay is a great teacher and coach, putting us through the paces of these very physical methods. They take seeing and feeling clay differently. Handling it differently. Even planning our forms in a new way, before we even touch the clay. It’s an amazing new perspective for all of us who come from a different kind of clay education. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined in this collaborative project at Gardiner Museum @gardinermuseum. Your active participation was key to bringing this project to life. Thank you to those who joined my presentation at NCECA 2024; your overwhelmingly warm welcome was truly appreciated. I truly enjoyed the conversations, questions, and comments I received after my demo. I hope I was able to share something you can apply in your own studio to enhance your practice. Workshop announcement ✨Let’s create some vessels on the beautiful island of Bali! @gayacac MATTERS OF SIZE: a Contemporary Korean Take on Technique, Scale & Staturewith Grace Han June 16-29, 2024Go Big during this immersive two-week hands-on workshop with Canadian/Korean ceramic artist Grace Han. This workshop will transport you to the captivating world of Korean traditional throwing techniques. You will delve into the art of Su-re-jil and Sseol-jil, two ancient methods that will empower you to create large, stunning forms on the potter’s wheel. From day one you will explore time-honored practices and embrace the joy of a classical approach using authentic Korean Onggi tools. Han will demonstrate that throwing large forms is not just about muscle, but rather more about finesse; the beauty of small, repetitive movements, patience, and sensitivity. Coil throwing, slab throwing, dry throwing, paddling, even wedging clay by means of stepping barefoot onto a large pad of clay as if performing a circular dance — all demystified during the course of this workshop. Practice these and the results will be extraordinary. Once the generously-scaled vessels are bisque fired, you will consider traditional glaze aesthetics, innovative surface design possibilities, and personal expression, so that each participant lands on a one-of-a-kind balance of these.
