Grace Kelly photographed by Howell Conant during her voyage to Monaco on the SS Constitution in April 1956. On April 4, 1956, Grace, along with 50 family members and friends, her bridesmaids, and her two dogs, set sail to Monacoโ€” a historic journey full of excitement and anticipation. With over 80 pieces of luggage, this 8-day trip to the French Riviera was described as โ€œa floating summer campโ€ by one of her bridesmaids. On board were many other photographers, but only Howell Conant had access to Grace personally, as they were very close friends. Later on, he became the unofficial photographer of the House of Grimaldi. On April 12, 1956, Grace arrived in Monaco, and less than a week later, โ€œThe Wedding of the Centuryโ€ took place.

This year will be the 69th anniversary of the marriage between Grace and Rainier. ๐Ÿค

Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis, and John Williams in Alfred Hitchcockโ€™s TO CATCH A THIEF (1955). The two-tone blue chiffon dress is one of Edith Headโ€™s most iconic costume designs. This Grecian-style dress features a fitted bodice. spaghetti straps, and is accessorized with a matching blue clutch bag, white open-toe sandals, and a blue chiffon scarf. Worn without jewelry, the gown certainly speaks for itself. Without a doubt, this is the fashion garment I will always love the most on Grace; it accentuates her beauty, cool-toned coloring (fun fact: Grace Kelly was a โ€œSummerโ€), and is so elegant and timeless. We have Edith Head to thank for creating such glamorous, perfect outfits for Grace. ๐Ÿ’™

Rare footage of Grace Kelly on vacation with her family in Ocean City, New Jersey, in the early 1950s. The Kelly family purchased a beachfront lot and built a summer home at 2536 Wesley Avenue in 1929. Designed in the Spanish Mission Revival style, it retains its original appearance. Graceโ€™s parents, John and Margaret Kelly, raised their children here in the summer. It was essentially a second home for Grace, and she made many fond memories growing up. Even after Grace became Princess of Monaco, she and Prince Rainier would return to Ocean City in the summers for family reunions with their children. Her younger sister, Lizanne, lived in the house with her husband, Donald LeVine, and daughter, Grace LeVine, until they passed away in 1999 and 2000. Lizanne sold the property in 2001. Most recently, it was sold again in 2022 for $2.5 million.

Rare footage of Grace Kelly arriving in Dallas, Texas for 18th Annual Neiman-Marcus Fashion Show in September of 1955. She is greeted by reporters and fans, then escorted by the president of Neiman Marcus, Stanley Marcus. Grace was the recipient of the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award for โ€œBest Dressed Womanโ€ at the event, hosted at the Downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus Flagship location at 1618 Main Street. In a follow-up letter, Grace expressed her thanks: โ€œDear Mr. Marcus, It was a great pleasure for me to be in Dallas for your Fashion Exposition. I enjoyed it tremendously. I canโ€™t tell you how delighted I was on seeing the store. It surpassed all my expectations. May I extend my sincerest thanks for my beautiful Traina-Norell and your kind hospitality. Most sincerely, Grace Kelly.โ€ ๐Ÿค

Princess Grace of Monaco arrives in Dallas, Texas to take part in Neiman-Marcusโ€™ Fete Des Fleurs in October of 1971. She is escorted into an airport press conference by the president of Neiman-Marcus, Stanley Marcus, and several young girls present her with bouquets of flowers. ๐Ÿ’
This week, we reflect on the iconic Neiman Marcus Dallas Flagship, which officially closed its doors September 30th. A magnet for fashion icons and movie stars, dozens of celebrities had the privilege of visiting including Coco Chanel, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and of course, Grace Kelly. Grace herself was lucky enough to have visited in 1955 and again in 1971. Neimans will forever be remembered as a cultural symbol of luxury and glamour and an icon of Dallas. ๐Ÿค @historyundressed has started a petition to re-open Neimans as a ticketed museum and event venue (or as a fashion gallery for exhibitions or home to Dallas Collegeโ€™s El Centro Campus). Any of these proposals would be a way to preserve the essence of NM here in Dallas. As Hayley put it best: โ€œNeiman Marcus Flagship is our Tiffanyโ€™s to New York City.โ€ Please consider signing the petition. Link is in my stories. ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ

Quote: โ€œWhat strikes first is a sapphire-blue gaze. Intense, piercing. And a first name that perfectly sums up her charisma: grace. โ€œShe is a rare phenomenon in the film industry,โ€ Alfred Hitchcock would later observe. โ€œShe is one of those people who can step into any important role.โ€

Quote: โ€œIf there was one thing that young Gracie loved, it was theatre. At 12, a pupil at the Old Academy Players of East Falls, a Philadelphia neighbourhood, she stepped on stage for the first time in the play Donโ€™t Feed the Animals. What a revelation!โ€ฆโ€

Quote: โ€œMy parents were very broad-minded people. There was no bad profession for them,โ€ she later declared. โ€œSince I was their daughter, they knew that whatever profession I chose, I would do it well. That was enough for them.โ€

Quote: โ€œFrom then on, a generation of young women wanted to imitate the โ€œKelly styleโ€. Her elegance differed from the eraโ€™s canons. An โ€œice-cold beautyโ€, โ€œfire under iceโ€ some would say. The actress did not much like these descriptions. But with her slender figure, she was physically far from the Marilyn Monroe, glamorous and voluptuous, mid-1950s icon, also at the height of her fame.โ€

Quote: โ€œI was attracted by her sexual charm in all its subtlety,โ€ Alfred Hitchcock would confide. taken in Palais Princier de Monaco - Prince's Palace of Monaco by @gracekellyarchives

Grace Kelly, Louis Jourdan, and Brian Aherne as Princess Alexandra, Dr. Nicholas Agi, and Father Carl Hyacinth in Charles Vidorโ€™s THE SWAN (1956). Here is a little astronomy lesson for you. In this scene, Dr. Agi points out Vega to Alexandra. Vega is the brightest star of the Summer Triangle, a pattern of three bright stars: Vega, Altair, and Deneb. Each of these is within its respective constellation: Constellation Lyra (the Harp), Constellation Aquila (the Eagle), and Constellation Cygnus (the Swan). I think the title of this film may have a hidden connection to this star pattern (in addition to Prince Albertโ€™s quote at the end of the movie comparing Alexandra to a swan). Itโ€™s always interesting to gain more insight into these classic films. ๐Ÿฆข

Also, does anyone else love her sassy line at the beginning of the clip? โ€œScooch, your Highness.โ€

Princess Grace photographed by Howell Conant in Her art studio at Roc Agel while working on pressed flower collages, circa 1980. The creative type, Grace was not only a talented movie actress but a visual artiste. Her passion for flowers is exemplified through the dozens of botanical pressings she designed. At Roc Agel, the Princely familyโ€™s summer retreat, Grace had a private studio where she worked on Her craft. In โ€œMy Book of Flowers,โ€ she describes Her creative approach:

โ€œI never have a fixed plan when I set out to make a design. Sometimes I start with a color or shape in mind, and it just grows. I move the flowers about until I feel that I have harmonious group-ing, then I leave it for a bit and come back to it with fresh eyes and maybe add something or make a few changes or sometimes start all over. One thing you cannot do with this kind of work is to sit back with a sigh. If you do, everything goes on the floor and one sneeze can bring disaster!โ€
โ€œI create many of my pictures when I am on holiday at Rocagel. It is a kind of self-made clutter in the garden room, but strangely enough I mostly know where to put my hand on the pressed flowers I need. I think every woman develops her own personal radar system.โ€

These are just a few of the many collages assembled by Grace. She had such a flair for aesthetics and an eye for design. I love that later in life she found this creative outlet. As Grace puts it in Her book: โ€œLove of flowers has opened many doors for me.โ€ ๐ŸŒผ

โœจ Frame by frame, the magic of the "Marriage of the Century" lives on.

This exclusive look inside the "Mariage du Sieฬ€cle" exhibition at the Palais Princier de Monaco offers a fascinating opportunity to admire a spectacular, faithful replica of one of the most iconic wedding gowns in history. While the original dress resides safely in Princess Grace's hometown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, this stunning masterworkโ€”meticulously crafted by the Palaceโ€™s own artisansโ€”allows visitors to experience its true splendor up close. Nearly 70 years after the royal wedding, its elegance, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty continue to captivate.

๐Ÿ‘  Did you know?
Hidden inside Princess Grace's right wedding shoe was a copper penny, discreetly encased for good luck by designer David Evins. While the coin is best documented as a traditional lucky charm, many admirers see it as a touching reminder of Grace's American roots, a small piece of the life she left behind as she began her new journey as Princess of Monaco.

It is details like these that make the story of the "Marriage of the Century" so enduring and unforgettable.

What's your favorite detail of Princess Grace's wedding day? ๐Ÿ’™

Grace Kelly as Princess Alexandra in Charles Vidorโ€™s THE SWAN (1956). Although worn on screen for mere seconds, this costume deserves its own post. Designed by Helen Rose, this dress is of a floral pattern against a lavender background with lace trim and a matching hair ribbon. Ms. Rose used the finest fabrics she could; her work was indeed impeccable. The film was set in 1915, a time when womenโ€™s dresses were shifting back to the linear Empire silhouette with a high waistline. Grace, seemingly born to play the role of a princess (and in real life!), suits this style so well with her natural poise, elegance, and softness. THE SWAN and HIGH SOCIETY were her two last films as a Hollywood actress, both under Helen Roseโ€™s costume direction. It is no wonder that she ended up designing both of Graceโ€™s actual wedding dresses. ๐Ÿ’œ

A special mention to @dosesofgracekelly since she has a particular appreciation for this dress. We are still keeping our fingers crossed that this film is released in 4K Blu-Ray one day!
