photo dump!

i am so bad at posting regular updates. life moves so fast now, it’s hard to slow down and talk about what just happened, when something new has already started. i can’t include everything, but here’s a quick highlight reel of things i’ve yet to share with social media:

biddeford marching band cowboy train show, winter concerts, wisdom teeth GONE-ZO!!!, biddeford indoor marching arts scarecrows (and a movie theater, an art exhibit, and a fish tank), WGI percussion finals, spring concerts, parades, bird watching, going outside, and currently in progress: a badass year for the spartans drumline.

at the very least, and most importantly, i continue to be surrounded by music, laughter, and love!! by @gracemvrphy

What an awesome drumline.

Everyday, these guys were ready to work no matter the circumstance. Super motivated and talented. Serious teamwork. They could make me laugh even when I was in business mode, and that was a huge contributing factor to their success.

Super grateful. This summer meant a ton to me, thank you to the membership for being so great. What a privilege to teach this group. The future of the Spartans is stronger because of them. by @gracemvrphy

This year has been so crazy!!!!

I started a new job teaching beginner band, taught even more band after school, got a puppy, started running again… lots of up/down/in between - but ultimately, I’ve just done a lot of growing.

If I have anything to say about this past school year… I have learned how good music is for people. I see it make a difference every day for kids in the classroom! Even in the littlest ways. Sometimes the most beautiful music is just kids learning to play their first notes, and that’s amazing! We get so stuck on the “product” and we forget about the process, and it’s been very fun to revisit and focus on the basics every day. I am so thankful to continue to do what I love.

Thanks to everyone for your support this year. After all the sickness, all the struggle… I needed all the help I could get, thank you!!!!!

Looking forward to another great year!! (shoutout to SMYPE in the last video, lol. They walked so we could RUN!!)

What a summer!

I had the privilege of standing in front of the Spartans Battery and the @aggressivexline . A true testament to their strength, this drumline overcame an immense amount of challenges, and did so with the energy and focus that is true to the Spartans. Thank you, 2024 X-Line for welcoming me back to the Spartans with open arms!

Big THANK YOUs are in order to @gingadrumma and @jabari_perc for their incredible mentorship and guidance; what a dream come true to work with both of you. Another goes out to @klorenz22 and the schemers on the snare staff; and the rest of the battery staff. It takes a village and I am lucky to share it with you all.

The last slide of this post is the Biddeford/Saco/OOB representation at DCI this year. 6 years ago, I was the only Spartan to be marching from our home town. It is incredibly gratifying to see FIVE Spartans and a one Miss Phantom Regiment active in 2024. I am humbled to have even the smallest of impacts on our community.. and at the end of the day, I’m just a proud teacher.

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful 2024 season. How lucky I am to have been surrounded by so much music, energy, and love this summer. by @gracemvrphy

Teaching isn’t just about playing the drums.

It is important to commemorate hard work, perseverance, dedication, and most importantly, growth. These two have been my students since my very first year teaching. I have watched them grow from 7th grade kids, to bright young people ready to take on the next chapter of their lives. Barring the fact that it makes me “old” now, I can’t help but be sentimental about the past 6 years of my life.

In my reflection, I am struck by how much these two have taught ME. I have learned a lot about myself as an educator and as a role model for students. Teaching music and snare drumming is a significant part of it, sure; but teaching leadership, integrity, work ethic, kindness.. I would have never thought that those things were more important to me. Teach your students to be great people. It will reward you in every moment that you see them take the time to talk to a new student, to help someone who’s struggling, to choose kindness over conflict.

To my snare drummers, thank you. You are what created that culture you see in the very last picture. I am going to miss you so very much. by @gracemvrphy

I am very proud to announce I am officially a Vic Firth Endorsed Educator!

I have been teaching at Biddeford for 6 years now. My father and I started the program in 2019, where we competed at a select few MBDA shows. I am extremely proud to say the group has made it so far as to compete in their first WGI Regional this past weekend in Trumbull, CT. We’re only going up from here!!!

I have to thank the rest of the staff, past and present, for contributing to this program and its growth. Teaching a program in Maine comes with many, many challenges, and I can’t thank all of you enough for your continued support. You have helped these students grow into amazing musicians and performers, and you have helped mold me into the educator I am today!

Throughout my performance career, I have only ever played Vic Firth drumsticks. With the home factory here in Maine, I am very proud to represent my program and my state with the company that I have spent years performing with.

Biggest thank you to Brian Stockard at Vic Firth for his support. And as always, to Maureen Grandmaison for her wonderful pictures! taken in Biddeford High School by @gracemvrphy
