Heart the Lover follows a creative writing student from the charged atmosphere of her senior year at college, where the gifted and charismatic Sam and Yash draw her into a magnetic web of academic ambition, desire, and manipulation, to the lasting aftermath of their betrayals in her adult life.

What begins as a hopeful coming-of-age story ends at a point of family dysfunction, grief, and the difficult work of forgiveness. The first story, where the narrator is welcomed into Sam and Yash’s elite circle, feels tender and relatable, capturing the uncertainties of early adulthood and the tension between the comfort of established friendships and the intoxicating alure of love, belonging, and self-discovery. The later sections explore the enduring consequences of youthful choices, tracing how moments of desire, ambition, and betrayal reverberate across a lifetime. Cleverly framed as an act of storytelling, the novel addresses itself to an undefined ‘you’ to create a lingering sense of revelation and anticipation.

As a recent graduate of literature, contemplating my future and often yearning for the fun and familiarity of university life, I found myself deeply invested in the protagonist’s story. Her love of words, her desire to craft compelling narratives, and her tendency to find romance even in the most striking characters all felt familiar. I also enjoyed the motifs of card games, nicknames, and the inexplicable rituals that bind close friends together.

But why did I choose to read this in PUBLIC? The ending absolutely broke my heart. Beyond its exploration of death and unexpected pregnancy, it reveals the tragedy of overlooking the family who love us most and failing to nurture the relationships that sustain us.

My only complaint is that the relentless sentimentality and pretentious philosophical musings occasionally felt a little excessive, even for me! I would have liked for some of that attention to have been directed towards the protagonists struggles with her child’s illness, which is often mentioned but never fully explored.

The Vanishing Half follows Stella and Desiree Vigness, identical twins whose light skin enables them to inhabit different racial, social, and familial identities. The novel begins with Desiree returning to Mallard, the small Southern town she once longed to escape, in search of her mother’s support and refuge from her abusive husband. Meanwhile, Stella has built a new life in California, concealing her racial identity from her friends, husband, and children as she denies her family and passes for white. Whilst Desiree struggles with Mallard’s small-minded attitudes, Stella’s carefully constructed life is destabilised by the arrival of a Black family in their neighbourhood.

The novel has been criticised for raising issues of colourism, sexuality, and racial trauma without exploring them in sufficient depth. This criticism feels unfair and perhaps reflects the disproportionate expectation placed on Black writers to provide clear narrative solutions to complex social problems. When The Vanishing Half is understood as a story of sisterhood and the ways in which parents’ choices shape their children’s lives, it emerges as compelling and deeply nuanced.

I enjoyed the way Bennett shifts focus to Desiree and Stella’s children, who construct their own identities while moving towards a more forgiving understanding of the past. Desiree’s daughter, Jude, inherits her mother’s determination but succeeds where she could not, leaving Mallard for Los Angeles to pursue a medical degree. Her story explores the prejudice she faces as a dark-skinned girl raised in a community that prizes light skin, as well as the love and acceptance she finds in Reese, a transgender man. Stella’s daughter, Kennedy, grows up believing she is white and comes to embody many of the privileges her mother wished for, but struggles to find her place in the world.

When the two daughters meet, with Jude serving as a waitress at a party hosted for Kennedy’s father, Kennedy questions both her upbringing and her mother’s carefully guarded past. Their convergence demonstrates how identity reverberates across generations and how the past, no matter how deeply buried, inevitably resurfaces. by @gracereadsandreviews

Girl, Woman, Other follows twelve interconnected characters, mostly Black, British women and queer identities, exploring their varied experiences of family, love, and friendship. Through their distinct voices, Evaristo captures the complex intersections of identity across generations, tracing both a broad sweep of history and the changing modern world. Crucially, she emphasises the connections that persist across their differences, giving equal weight and validity to each perspective. This multiplicity is reflected in the novel’s fluid blend of prose, poetry and unconventional sentence structures, mirroring its diversity of voices, periods and experiences.

Although these experiences differ from mine as a white cisgender woman, I still found this book deeply engaging. Each of Evaristo’s characters is given the opportunity to realise, explore, and reshape their identity through exchanges with others and an active engagement in their cultural heritage. Likewise, the reader never remains contained within a single story and is instead encouraged to listen to each experience. Initially reading it at sixteen during lockdown, I related to the human experiences of many characters and found familiarity in their struggle with female identity, while also developing empathy for Black and queer experiences beyond my own. Living in a diverse Britain, surrounded by people with different experiences and identities, listening to these perspectives feels especially valuable.

I find it clever how the characters are connected, both through immediate familial ties and subtle similarities in their routines, struggles and self-definition. For example, the intergenerational link between non-binary Megan/Morgan, their great-grandmother Hattie and Hattie’s mother, Grace, reveals how attitudes towards gender evolve across generations. Despite Morgan’s fraught relationship with their mother, Hattie accepts their identity and leaves them her farm, transforming inherited land into a space of refuge, community and empowerment.

$Things Fall Apart explores the early impact of colonialism in Nigeria by focusing on the plight of Okonkwo, a respected warrior and community leader, and the disintegration of Igbo society under colonial pressure. Achebe carefully portrays both the depth of Igbo society, rooted in complex organisational systems and spiritual traditions, and the devastating effects of European intervention, which ultimately contribute to the erosion of established customs. These changes are often foreshadowed through nature before they are fully understood by the community, manifesting in harsh seasons and unfruitful crops. Through Okonkwo’s story, Achebe critically examines contradictions within Igbo society. Okonkwo gains status through his strength and determination to distance himself from his father, whom he regards as weak and feminine, but his violence and emotional rigidity ultimately lead to the actions that drive him into exile. Meanwhile, the values that once united the community begin to fracture as Nwoye and others are drawn to Christianity. The new religion appeals to those troubled by both Okonkwo’s violence and the wider injustices embedded within certain traditions, offering them a language through which to express forms of discontent that had previously remained unspoken. Rather than presenting Christianity as a complete solution, however, Achebe highlights the limitations and ignorance of the missionaries, suggesting instead that meaningful reform must come from the community itself through a return to local traditions of unity, reciprocity, and collective responsibility. One aspect of the novel I found particularly fascinating was Achebe’s portrayal of the rich beauty underpinning Igbo culture and society. Through the imagery of the drums as the “heart” of the village, Achebe presents culture as a dynamic and living process sustained by shared experiences, collective memory, and daily interactions with the natural environment. Similarly, wrestling is depicted as a social process brought to life by artists, musicians, dancers, spectators, and the masked egwugwu, highlighting the interconnectedness of social and cultural life. by @gracereadsandreviews$

James is a playful yet thought-provoking reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that grants Jim, an enslaved man, full intellect, agency, and interiority. After fleeing to avoid being sold away from his family, James joins Huck, who has faked his death to escape his abusive father. Bound by the irony that it appears that James fled after killing Huck, they embark on a transformative journey down the Mississippi River, encountering unusual strangers, witnessing the brutal realities of slavery, and forging an unlikely friendship. Throughout the novel, James routinely relies on his wit to pursue freedom, concealing his intelligence from white characters and helping others resist enslavement.

What fascinated me most was the novel’s exploration of language: the language imposed on different social groups, the language people claim as their own, and the ways people disguise their voices around others. James and many other Black characters adopt a deliberately simplified dialect when speaking to white people, despite surpassing many of them in his ability to read, write, and reinterpret the stories that shape history.

James’s fantastical adventures are often hilarious, if perhaps a little absurd. What makes the novel so successful, I believe, is the way Everett subverts the traditional adventure narrative, transforming it into something perilous, constantly overshadowed by the threat of capture, torture, or death. In doing so, he highlights the disparity between white and Black experiences of escape and survival.

I love how the theme of music is woven into this. From the musician who gives James a pencil to write his book, to his sensitivity to the natural rhythms of human speech and laughter, to his brief employment as a tenor in a band, James is always surrounded by sound. Yet these musical encounters also expose the racism of a society that celebrates imitations of Black culture while marginalising Black people themselves.
