September is the month most dear to my heart, not just because of my birthday (shoutout!), but because the topic this month represents. I was about this age the first time I had the thought that my life just may be better if it didn’t exist on this Earth. From then until now, I have faced this a multitude of times. Every single time I had moments I was sure tomorrow would not come. Every single time it did. Many of these times I got there alone, too petrified that the “happy, go-lucky” image I created for myself would be tainted. I stayed silent for the sake of my image. When you are that deep in your own head, people’s words often mean nothing. They simply become words on a screen reminding you of your own sadness. In these moments, it is crucial you find the part of yourself that is still curious enough to wonder about the future. Honoring that curiosity is the greatest act of self-love I have ever put on myself. The joy you’d usually attribute to a vacation must be applied to the smallest parts of your day. Eventually, you will find joy in simply making lunch. Eventually, the smiles will stop being forced. Eventually, someone will tell you they believe in you and it will stick. Eventually, you will stop and realize that you made it out of there. Asking people how they are is suicide prevention. If I could go back and sit with my 10, 16, 18, and even 20 year old self, I think she’d ask me what she’s going to miss. I could tell her that she’d miss her high school graduation or her first day of college, but I wouldn’t do that. I’d tell her that she’s going to miss the feeling of laughing until her stomach hurts with friends who truly love her. An ice cream cone loaded with sprinkles. Driving with the windows down. Deep conversations. A good cry, because pain is a feeling worth seeing out, too. You are not alone. People love you. Find the part of yourself that is curious about the future. Honor it. Do it for yourself first, and watch the love you pushed away flow in. Watch the joy come back. It will always, always, come back. Take the time, take the day off, take the month away.
