Hi! My name is Graciela. I guess it’s time for a little reintroduction.🫦

Most of you have been following me for well over 10 years, which honestly feels insane… It also means you’ve seen me at some of my lowest points.
Weirdly enough, that makes it much easier to be honest on here. It doesn’t feel like I’m performing for strangers; it feels like I’m talking to a community I’ve learned so much from over the years.

It does also mean that I probably no longer fit the image some of you have of me. And that’s okay.

I’ve spent years trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Academia? Writing? Journalism? Teaching? Politics? Social justice warrior (lol)? I always thought I had to choose one thing.

Looking back, I think I was asking the wrong question. Instead of asking what I wanted to do, I should’ve been paying attention to how I naturally move through the world. The things I kept coming back to were always the same: bringing people together, asking questions, teaching, hosting conversations and making people feel seen.

Today I work for an NGO that creates workshops, creative activities and meeting places where people can reconnect with themselves and with one another. It has only reinforced something I’d been feeling for years: that healing and growth rarely happen in isolation. They happen when people feel safe enough to be honest, when they feel like they belong, and when they’re met with openness instead of judgement.

Somewhere along the way I also became a yoga teacher. Looking back, that probably makes more sense than anything else. Yoga has this funny way of giving words to things you’ve been trying to understand for years. Ahimsa, satya, svadhyaya… compassion, honesty and the willingness to keep looking inward. I definitely don’t embody those values perfectly, but they’ve become a quiet compass for how I try to teach, work and move through the world.

That’s why my classes won’t only be about the asanas. We’ll move, breathe and sweat, but we’ll also slow down, pay attention and get curious. Yoga asks a lot more of us than flexibility.

I guess this is my way of saying that when you book a class, you’re not just booking an hour of movement. There are by @graciela.malou

It fascinates (and infuriates) me how often yoga, wellness, self-development, social work, … end up reproducing neoliberal logic.

ā€œKnow your worth.ā€
ā€œSuccess is an inside job.ā€
ā€œYou earn what you believe you’re worth.ā€
ā€œThe universe gives you what you deserveā€
ā€œLimiting beliefs are what’s holding you back.ā€
Etc etc

The problem isn’t necessarily these phrases (some are rather stoopid) but their usage. It starts when structural inequality disappears from the conversation. When low wages become a self-worth issue. When burnout becomes a failure to regulate. When injustice becomes a mindset problem.

At that point, we’re no longer challenging the system or ā€œcarving our own pathā€. We’re literally reproducing.

And maybe that isn’t always ideological, but it is always political.

Maybe internalising neoliberalism has become a coping mechanism. Maybe believing you need to change hurts less than accepting the system was never built equally in the first place (and is seriously fucked up)ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

However, that doesn’t make it any less harmless.

It still shifts responsibility from systems to individuals. And that doesn’t just harm the people buying the message, it really hurts those already made vulnerable by the very systems you claim(/pretend?) to challenge.

So to my fellow social workers, yogis, coaches, wellness practitioners, … : be mindful of your language, and be honest about your ideology and politics. Let’s not sell individual solutions to structural problems, just because they’re profitable. Even if you’re not doing it on purpose. Let’s stay wokešŸ„¹šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ„°šŸ™‡šŸ½ā€ā™€ļøšŸ§˜šŸ½šŸ˜š by @graciela.malou

TW: lange tekst🄸😳

Choose carefully, and consciously consider the contexts you commit yourself to.

A few years ago, I came to yoga through the physical practice. What kept me there was everything around it.

The breath. The people. The philosophy.

Through this page, I’ll share bits and pieces of that, alongside upcoming small-group sessions and 1:1 practices on my rooftop terrace in Borgerhout and at other cosy (and safe!!) locations in Antwerp, Leuven, and Ghent. I’ll do women only as well as mixed.

If you’ve been feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, lonely, or if you’re just curious, you’re truly welcome here. by @graciela.malou
