Happy Birthday Uncle Roger! Love and miss you forever. You followed your passions. And as a little girl I followed you around while you created scary movies, like “Water, Water” and “The Mind’s Eye” (I was terrified but I had to watch). You taught me about thunderstorms when a tree fell on our house and I was so afraid I almost never returned to Crown Island. You made me feel safe. And you taught me about constellations from our boathouse roof—Ursa Major (the Big Dipper!) and Cassiopeia and planets like Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Mars—visible in August and September.
Many people will remember you for being an exceptional Chemistry teacher for 30+ years, beginning at Miss Porter’s after you served in the Peace Corps in Fiji (I remember you drinking “grog” on our dock—I tried it and I doubt I will try it again—but I was fascinated!). Others will remember you as a dedicated martial artist in Isshinryu karate (a 5th degree black belt!). In your spare time you taught a complimentary self-defense class. You even taught us some moves. Most will remember you for your award-winning documentary about your grandfather, Irving Langmuir, the American engineer who was granted the Nobel Laureate for Chemistry in 1932.
Those closest to you will remember you as a loving husband to your wife, Kate Baker, your beloved rescue pup, “Daisy”, your brothers Chris and Tim, sisters Andy and Judy, our mom, Grace, Aunt Jess and Uncle Harry, your slew of adoring cousins, nieces and nephews—not to mention our Engish Springer Spaniel, Remington “Remy” Meigher (pictured), who was determined to win your heart (despite being a “rapscallion”) from the moment he went bounding onto Crown Island and into your 1937 Chris-Craft, the “Wendy”.
I will always remember you as a patient, insightful, inspiring and wonderful uncle who allowed me and my friends to listen to your original Beatles “Abbey Road” album from 1979 so we could “hear what The Beatles should sound like”. Although you are not here, your magnetic and powerful presence remains on Crown Island and on Lake George forever. Roger Ransom Summerhayes, August 20, 1956–February 11, 2025
