There’s a stage one gets to in life where you begin to question yourself: Am I getting it right? What am I doing wrong? Where did it go wrong? Where did I go wrong? Am I worth the chase? Will the business idea work? That stage is one phase that, if not properly grounded with the right set of people, can lead to depression.

Depression is an enemy that slowly, without notice, creeps in and begins to demolish every hard work one has done and built over the years. It comes like a thief and steals all the joy, the vibrance, the laughter, and leaves you an empty shell of who you formerly were. It brings pain, agony, and hate—and most times, that deceptive peaceful silence that shuts the world out.

It makes you question all your decisions and hate yourself to the point where you begin to believe, “Nobody loves me, so they won’t miss me.” Then comes the urge—just a little dose of pain, just to feel something, to know you’re not fading away. What starts as a moment becomes a habit, one you’re unable to leave behind.

At the slightest sign of a challenge, the panic begins. The first thought that comes is failure. You try to push yourself outside your comfort zone, but then you hear that discouraging voice from deep within: “It’s going to fail. There’s no need to try. Everyone will laugh at you. You’re a failure. What good has ever come from your previous attempts?”

The voices grow so loud that you seek pain to shut them out—just one “harmless” cut. Then another. And another. Until it becomes a tattoo of endless battles carved upon your skin. “I’ll try again,” you say—one cut after another—until one ceases to exist.

So, what is the way forward?

When that friend comes knocking, and you’re so engrossed in life’s challenges that you miss the signs—then later you hear of the silent battle they couldn’t win—you weep and say, “Oh, but they never spoke up… Oh, what a painful exit… Oh, I never knew they were going through that.” But they did speak. No one listened. They did cry. No one heard.

What our African parents fail to understand is that sometimes there are days that our inner child's voice still crys. Why didn't you listen when I spoke out? Why do you always feel you're always right and when the truth comes to light you turn the table and invalidate my feelings? Why didn't my opinion matter? Why didn't you apologize when you were wrong? Why was I punished for others mistakes? Why was I taught to be silent when been oppressed, in the disguise of do you want to bring shame to the family? Why did you use ohh she will soon go to her husband's house, by the time he's done with her, she'll understand respect just because I aired my opinion?
Why? Why? Why? Why? These are questions we'll never have answers to and the fear of the unknown cripples our growth.
