I had the incredible opportunity to play in Belmont’s Classical Honors Recital this evening.

Always a joy to play through any of the Bach cello suites, but it’s an even greater joy getting to share this music with my friends and colleagues!

Thank you @imgrantmorgan for recording tonight

Thank you @carminemiranda_ for all the help, advice, and encouragement over the past four years!

From exploding trees to Bocelli, this past year has been unbelievable to say the least. I graduated!! After getting the honor of playing at commencement, I started my masters degree in Classical Cello Performance. This year I have had the pleasure of performing in the Graduate honors recital, joining Andrea Bocelli on his tour, making incredible friends, and getting a random bloody nose during a studio session! I am super blessed to have gotten these opportunities this year (maybe not the bloody nose so much), and super excited to see what crosses my path in the years to come! by @grahamdehaan

It's so weird to me that I performed the Saint Saens cello concerto in May. Life has changed so much for me, as I'm sure for most of my friends, in the last 6 months. I have made new friends, probably forgotten some old ones, made great memories, some sad ones too. I think going to college has been the best thing that has happened to me. It's tough for sure, but I am already a happier person, I know more about the real world, and I am learning how to be an adult.

Being an adult. That's a weird one too. I am legally an adult. I am 18, so why do I still feel like I am 12? Why do I do weird dances in the dorm hallway at two in the morning with my friends, why do I walk on the curbs of the street and try to stay balanced, why does life still pose the same amount of journey and open ended adventure as it did when I was a kid? I don't think I'll ever have a clear cut answer to that.

I think the single best thing about maturing is realizing how wrong you were about almost everything as a kid. You realize your parents and teachers were in fact 99% of the time correct about most everything. I do in fact need to get decent sleep and eat well to do well in school. I have to learn how to balance every little aspect of living. It's fun.

I guess I should've raised my hand when that one lady asked if anyone was going into a music degree at graduation, because here I am at the Belmont School of Music with the concerto I recorded in May (this video). It's weird to me that this was recorded In May because I am already a totally different cello player. It's amazing how fast you see progress when you slow everything way down and work on the basics (sorry Sally). My first lesson I got assigned a C Major four octave scale at 60bpm, whole notes. That is all I practiced for about 2 weeks. It was amazing how much progress I had made across the board in my musicality and my physical playing. For one, I could play this concerto faster and more in tune than before. I just wish I had done this slow meticulous work sooner.

So friends and teachers from TC, you'll be happy to hear I'm doing well. I've met great people and I'm learning more each day.

Can't wait to see you all soon! by @grahamdehaan
