“Finch in Flight” ~12 x 12” acrylic and oil on wood panel. ~ This new artwork will be installed at the Art Hub Gallery in Carleton Place this coming Monday, September 28th. I set out to create a piece with a strong composition that balances colours and shapes, as I’ve been asked to give a talk on composition and figured I’d better have a somewhat decent example!

This artwork was not meant to be a pretty picture... or to sell.

The Crushing Sound of Loss
20x20”
Mixed Media

The piece is inspired by an article I recently read, which states that there are 3 billion fewer birds in North America than half a century ago. Pollinators are also decreasing rapidly due to habitat loss and the extensive, careless use of pesticides. I have witnessed this in my lifetime — as an avid birder and nature lover - I feel there are significantly fewer birds, butterflies, and bees than when I was younger.

Everything we do has a ripple effect on the other creatures sharing this planet. Yet, we must not lose hope. We can all do small things to help:

- Learn how to prevent bird window collisions
- Avoid using harmful pesticides and don’t hire mosquito companies to blanket spray your property!
- Plant pollinator-friendly gardens
- Support groups that protect the environment and the planet.

This mixed media piece was created for my Ukrainian uncle, who had a significant influence on my life and sparked my lifelong passion for birds and nature.

Every once in a while, I do a painting with no real planning or thought to colour, just paint in the moment, and this is the result. @artscarletonplace

A reworked painting with a fancy frame, inspired by memories of swallows gathering on hydro lines near my family cottage.

I photographed this Dory years ago, moored off the coast of Cape Breton. The image was the focal point for this 12 x 12” mixed media artwork. It was also chosen as one of the promotional images for the Art Hub Galleries’ latest show, “Magnificene,” which runs until June 28th.

A few years ago, I bought a bunch of tulips for my mother and photographed them next to a window, which created a nice backlit effect. I’ve made several mixed-media pieces based on that image—this version, however, is purely paint, fresh off the easel!
(Okay - truthfully, I finished it a week ago and it’s now available at the Art Hub Gallery)

| should have posted this earlier when there was still snow on the ground! However, Dark-eyed Juncos are still sticking around a bit longer before heading further north to nest. You can see this painting and many more beautiful works of art at the Art Hub Gallery.

A glimpse of my space at the Carleton Place Art Hub Gallery. It’s so nice to be part of this Co-Op gallery and the new show “Whispers of Change,” on now until June 29th.

Spring brings the return of swallows to Ontario, and I love watching them hunt on the fly. This new, larger work is on display at the beautiful Art Hub Gallery in Carleton Place.
