In Watership Down there’s a passage, “Rabbits live close to death and when death comes closer than usual, thinking about survival leaves little room for anything else.”

I imagined how it would be to emerge from this, possessed by the fearful impulsiveness of a rabbit and the curious hedonism of a human without burdens. How it would be to discover the sensation of being tickled for the first time, to be afraid of the attack on a controlled body, but with the capacity to be curious.

Later in the book: “Many human beings say that they enjoy the winter, but what they really enjoy is feeling proof against it”

They question whether they enjoy being tickled, or enjoy the pantomime of defending against it. Thank you to Miruna and Jason at Badlands Art Department for a week of conversations, adventure, silliness, delicious meals, and the time and space I needed to reconnect with drawing. This is a unique place, a pocket-dimension you enter through the infinite canola fields, shocked by the visible time and history all around you. The canyon is a humbling backdrop. I spent most of my time at the residency grounds near Wayne, tucked away between two of the many bridges, but I had a chance to explore the abandoned mine sites and windblown buttes and cliffs that look down on Highway 10, possibly the most interesting strip of road in Canada.

You have the impression of being among mountains, but instead, you exist deep below the topsoil, with the weight of time and erosion above you and around you. The unlocked churches of Dorothy, duelling across a red-ant-filled driveway, the vastness of the surrounding desert and farmland, and the presence of wildness, whether the graceful anachronistic Pronghorn or the industriously frustrating beaver, have all left an impression I am glad to be the keeper of. taken in Hoodoos Trail by @grahamokay

Excited to be showing ‘Sweetie’ and ‘Snake Medicine’ with @motherinlawsart and @fieldprojects at @upstateartweekend at the end of June, join us in beautiful Germantown for the party.

Sweetie is the piece I created after the sudden and traumatic death of my cat and best friend in Sept 2024, shortly after starting my MFA. She died in pain in a New Jersey veterinary hospital that seemed largely unconcerned with her suffering and far more interested with selling me merch as she died. Months later, her vet in Montréal mailed me a card signed by every veterinarian, nurse and staff member with notes and kind words I have trouble with this dichotomy. I struggle to understand that time.

I will be glad to have this piece live, decay, and change over the two month exhibition. The materials are raw wood, ceramic, and natural latex, all of which I expect to absorb, change, and age extensively. by @grahamokay

I’ve been thinking about fire as a dialectic, an embodied being, and a colour: blameless destruction or something. You can’t be angry at fire, or it can’t receive your anger, and you love it and are hypnotized by it, and it burns you yet. by @grahamokay
