How to get film borders on your photos! 🎞️

We’ve had a lot of requests recently for full frame borders - a growing trend of photographers wanting to share their work with a further sense of tactility, texture and an analogue aesthetic.

Film borders are a result of using a mask when scanning film that extends slightly beyond the size of the photo itself and captures a little bit of the debate around the photo that gets baked into the scans.

They exploded in popularity in the last few years. Borders not only enhance a sense of analogue charm, but they also frame nicely when sharing works online, and can be a clean, pleasing way of sharing photos full frame, without being cropped!

If you’re a lab customer of ours, you can select to have full frame borders included as part of your scans, and each frame will have a slightly unique film border included with your film pictures.

If you’re a digital photographer or a hybrid shooter and want the freedom to apply borders to any photo; digital frames, old film scans, etc, we’ve carefully and meticulously extracted our favourite and most characterful analogue film borders and have released a drag-and-drop border pack so you can apply film borders with more creative control ✨

Mix and match analogue artefacts to add texture, soul and film-inspired feeling to your digital photographs. by @grainmaker.co

We shot some scenes side by side on film and digital..

If we didn’t highlight which was which, how easy would it be to tell what’s film & what’s digital?

Utilising industry-grade film lab machines, we’ve fine tuned our film-based colour grading to give your digital photos a true analogue feel.

Your audience might not be able to tell the difference..

Any well-seasoned hiker in Tasmania will be familiar with the work of John Chapman — an adventurous spirit who documented some of the state’s finest walks in beautiful detail.

Inspired by the timeless photographs that fill his guidebooks, I set out into the Tasmanian backcountry with a digital camera in hand.

Thanks to @grainmaker.co — a film emulation tool my friend Chris and I have been developing — I was able to capture and create visuals similar to those that inspired me to head into the wilderness in the first place.

Borders and paper textures add a lot of nuanced character and depth to your photographs.

Film borders have become more and more common online lately - giving imagery a sense of tactility online & helping make an image feel a little more alive.

Paper textures add an extra dimension of character - subtle textures, dust, creases and folds give a photograph a print quality - like it’s been scanned in.

We’ve just overhauled our Film Borders and Paper Textures pack with a huge amount of real analogue print and border assets. Here’s a few examples! by @grainmaker.co

Light leaks are common in film photography - a happy accident of light entering the camera through the back or the lens & hitting the film inside.

Though technically a ‘fault,’ light leaks have been embraced by generations of photographers, including Ryan McGinley, Hiromix & Nobuyoshi Araki.

We offer hundreds of real, analogue light leaks, extracted through industry-grade scanners so you can play with these happy accidents with your own imagery.
