M. Pires is the guy behind Lisbon solo project @vaelthunder, and some of this record has been following him around for more than a decade. He used to play bass in @thevoynichcode, but “Expose / Exist” is his own thing, pulling metalcore, sludge and post-hardcore into nine tracks built from riffs going as far back as 2013.

A lot changed while he was making it. He stopped caring so much about everything being technical, disappeared from active social media for years, then ended up writing a record about content, algorithms, disinformation and the weird pressure to keep yourself visible online. His own summary is pretty good: “I made an album exposing the feed, and it will mostly have to live on the feed to be heard.”

We talked about those lost years, old The Voynich Code connections, three different home-studio setups, late-night headphone sessions and why finishing the music was only half the job. The vinyl is happening too, pressed in Portugal by @gramapressing and expected by the end of October.

Two high-school students spent two weeks at Grama and asked us about pretty much everything they saw.

We answered. They listened, looked around, brought out their phones and turned some of what they learned into a series of shorts.

Trouxemos vinho para a barricada: a ressurreição do Jardim do Enforcado

O espaço físico é indissociável dos movimentos sub e contraculturais e a sua aglutinação corporativa destruidora dos lugares colectivos, demole ao mesmo tempo os focos de resistência formados na união contra um inimigo, outrora concreto na forma do estado, agora difuso na intangível forma de capitalismo.

A Feira da Ladra, canibalizada agora pela uniformização cultural turistificada, assim como a maior parte de Lisboa, Porto, Algarve e em breve todo o país, serviu na era pré-internet como ponto de convergência de pessoas com interesses comuns, por estes dias chamados nichos, numa conveniente designação mercantil.

Lá, Leonel Ventorim, escritor, mediador cultural, crítico de teatro e impulsionador da cena mod portuguesa e fundador dos Herdeiros de Loudun, nos anos 80, juntamente com Paulinho, conheceram Luís Futre. O encontro deu-se na banca de cassetes pirata de Jorge Santos, impossível nesta era de saturação musical onde a ausência de esforço na obtenção dos discos desmaterializados, os desvaloriza e gera desinteresse. Mais alguns encontros depois, entram para a banda em 1988, Carlos Pancadas, do Montijo e Luís Gago, que tocava então com Carlos e Serpa dos Ku de Judas, onde viria a militar João Ribas, mais conhecido pela banda Censurados.

Não foi essa a formação que actuou com os K4 Quadrado Azul (ex-elementos dos Lagu Trop, Essa Entente e Aix La Chapelle) e com os Clandestinos na estreia do Rock Rendez Vous, onde a performance causou uma sensação mais vigorosa do que a própria música, inscrevendo-os na inóspita e desabitada terra de ninguém que é o cruzamento de referências como Artaud, La Fura Dels Baus, The Birthday Party ou Swans.

No aniversário da morte de Ian Curtis, com os lisboetas Khaos, inspirado em Screaming Lord Sutch que por sua vez se inspirou em Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Luís Futre surge em palco como oráculo estético do seria tendência na segunda vaga de Black Metal escandinavo.

Hard working days and less time for social media, but we passed order 1200 earlier this month.

Since November, that’s more than 200 new projects, with small changes along the way, a big storm in between, and constant improvement driven by everything we share and learn within our team and with our customers, visitors and suppliers.

Always focused on getting better, delivering on time, and handling every step with care.
