Some of my recent costume work for a @centralfloridaballet student🪡✨️🩰

This darling little "La Fille" costume needed sleeves, so I made some dainty puffed ones and trimmed them to match. I also draped a new pattern piece to extend the back of the bodice. The bodice itself also required alterations as it was much too big.
I really loved how the new look turned out!

The tutu only needed alterations and mending done.
I disassembled the back of the bodice to then reconstruction it to fit her perfectly, same as for the "La Fille" dress. She also required two bust darts, so that meant dissecting the trim and invisibly piecing it back together. I always love trim work and the challenge of this was a fun one! The extra work was so worth it though, I was really pleased with how the fit turned out.

Thank you to @centralfloridaballet, @audments.sewing and @mrsamylipkin for bringing me in to help with alterations! Ballet will always be my first costume love, so this was an especially enjoyable project for me. It was a pleasure working with all of you! 💐

Marianne Dashwood Finished Dress Pics
✨📸 💠🍃
This is probably one of my favorite projects to date. It was quite easy to sew and put together and it’s perfect for picnics, tea parties and promenades. 🌷☕✨
- Chemisette, stays, etc. are me-made.
- Cotton print fabric is from @burnleyandtrowbridge.
- Spencer jacket, bonnet and reticule were made by my sister.

Meet the Marianne Dashwood dress project! 💠🍃
This project is inspired by a dress worn by Marrianne in the 1995 Sense & Sensibility. I remember my confusion when I first saw it. I couldn’t quite figure out how it closed, so I decided to try and recreate it! Here are some construction photos as well as some of my historical inspiration. The beautiful printed cotton is from @burnleyandtrowbridge. Stay tuned for the finished dress pics!

The Josephine Dress Part: 4
Here are some photos of the finished dress! I have worn it to several dances and a few teas. And it was even used for a Regency Fashion class! I also made a set of detachable sleeves and a chemisette for daywear. I picked up the red kerchief in the second picture at a reenactment years ago, and the bonnet was made by my sister.

The Josephine Dress: Part 3. 👑
Once the pattern is drafted and fitted the construction can begin. With the structural under-layer of the bodice done, I then drape the skirt directly to it, pinning the pleats as I go. I prefer to simply work with a wide square of fabric for the skirt instead of draping or drafting a pattern first. The pleats are done by eye, pinned and pressed, before being sewing to the bodice.

My Favorite picture from Spring Dapper Day 2025! ✨💙👗
It's always exciting when I get to wear a full ensemble of things I've made. Knowing all of the hard work and little victories that went into a garment gives it so much more meaning. Not to mention the satisfying fit of something made to your measurements.🪡
I made this light blue blouse from a linen blend that is perfect for the summer heat, and the blue, anchor-print skirt is a cotton shirting. I added a horsehair hem and wear it with a petticoat for the quintessential full hemline of late 1950's fashion.

The Josephine Dress: Part 2. Let the construction begin!
✂🪡👗
The draping, design and fitting process is one of my favorite stages of any of the project that I do. There is usually quite a bit of back and forth between the dress form and the drafting table, and while it can occasionally feel tedious, it is always a rewarding and exciting experience.
I try to work directly from my sketch on projects like this, but occasionally the fabric will speak to me and I’ll make small design changes on the form.
With the bodice cut out of the fashion fabric and the flat lining basted on, the next step is to sew it together and drape the skirt!
