Here we go (again!)

Attempting to finish the New Mexico portion of the CDT.

Timing ought to be good…and yet, the monsoon gives us a wild finish with Flash Flood Warnings right where I’ll start — followed by blue skies and autumn perfection 🙏

Good practice to always have a backup plan and be flexible (as well as willing to slog through mud and quicksand!)

Laugavegur River Crossings!

Honestly after Canada’s Great Divide Trail, these were not hard at all…but, a few notes:

1. Krossá River in Thórsmörk has a metal mobile bridge over the deepest bit plus several mini-bridges over the smaller braids.
2. Þröngá River after Thórsmörk is known as the toughest crossing with three channels. The water in the deepest channel splashed to my knees and had a good pull, but was very doable. I did not take off my shoes.
3. Bládfjallakvisl River before Hvanngil Hut was the widest river crossing with a slight pull in the middle. The key is to not cross at the road which is very deep, rather move upstream.
4. River Brathálskvisl after Hvanngil Hut was shin deep and short with barely any current.
5. Grashagakvisl River after Álftavatn Hut has a helpful rope for balance.

Fire and Ice over the summit of the Fimmvörðuháls.

Plus a new hiking pal!

The trail takes us between monumental ice caps — Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.

As well as the Goðahraun lava field spewed out from the 2010 eruption of Magni and Móði Craters.

But even on a moonscape, we find electric green life in the thick moss and wildflowers including bright yellow Autumn Hawkbit.

Big challenges with a crevasse, exposure (aided by well-placed chains) and steep, eroded descents.

One of my most favorite hiking days when it only began to rain after I set my tent at Básar Campsite…!
