Tom would have been 89 today. I’ve been thinking for several days about the words of tribute I could give him and this morning, I realized I could write a book about him. Instead these words came to mind. Throughout his life, he left a piece of himself and the God he loved, with everyone he met. by @grannylew

Lewis family icon, great-great Grandpa Chet’s old 1940 Dodge truck,still running, and fascinating the young-er descendants! Proved to be just attractive enough to inspire a fifth-generation little boy, to take his first “long” trek through the uneven grass. Up until this day, he didn’t even want to stand on short, mowed grass. One of the most recent great grands, Theo Lefever, (Lynns grandson) took a big chance in his short walking career, that the truck would catch him. And it did. Though he did feel the need to clean off the running board a bit before trekking back to mom, Rachel!❤️ Great-grandpa Tom would be very pleased! by @grannylew

Yesterday, my daughters and I met in a little restaurant,(two girls in person and two on their phones) to celebrate Tom’s 88th birthday. As the day went on, many memories surfaced, and we had lots of conversations about him and what he means to us. I discovered that sometime in the last months, my memories of him have changed to being predominantly of the years when he was vibrant and such a central part of our lives. For quite a long time after he left us, the memories were of his suffering and decline and I took comfort in the fact that he was no longer suffering. But now, the memories are both harder and more joyful. Crazy combination! I am just so thankful for all of those many years. by @grannylew
