Around Canada Day, my son Josh badly dislocated his knee at the Refuge Cove General Store (otherwise one his all time favourite places.) Mikayla and her Coast Guard crew just happened to be there and were able to treat Josh, splayed out right beside the ice cream counter. On Labour Day weekend we happened to run in Mikayla again, same place, and they were happy to see Josh fully recovered.

One of my all time favourite bands… Southern Culture on the Skids from North Carolina finally back in Vancouver!

I’ve always particularly dug this song, “My House Has Wheels.” Besides being highly relatable for touring musicians, this one has an old-school open-road Stompin’ Tom meets Woody Guthrie feel that I’ve always loved. And lead singer Rick Miller introduced the song by saying, “when I was a kid my family had a RV. We used to drive up and camp on the shores of… LAKE ONTARIO.” Big cheer, opening chords.

Another awesome day out on the water with Straitwatch, which monitors all boats’ safe proximity around whales, making sure they can feed, swim, and do their thing without being bothered, or worse, struck.

Yesterday we were surprised to watch a pod or orcas swim into the very narrow Von Donop Inlet on the north end of Cortes Island, which is also a very popular anchorage with boats of all sizes constantly coming and going.

Straitwatch sat at the mouth of the inlet informing boats of the orcas and to slow down or shut ‘er down, be careful, and maintain legal distance. At one point, the orcas all gathered in the narrows, which caused a traffic jam of yachts as everyone waited patiently - and in awe - as the orcas foraged and swam back out.
