Quick October checklist:
Have you confirmed whether your federal program is operating under a continuing resolution this month?
Do you know the next report or continuation deadline for every multi-year award your organization is managing?

Neither of those questions depends on rumors about what the new fiscal year means. They depend on checking the actual agency forecast page and your own award calendar.

Read "What Actually Changes on October 1?" for the full list of what to check this month. Link to blog in bio.

October 1 came and went. Did anything actually change for your federal funding search?

If you spent September watching for a wave of year-end opportunities, the quiet can feel confusing. Here's what the new federal fiscal year actually means:
New appropriations (or a continuing resolution)
New budget periods for existing multi-year awards
Program offices that were holding announcements can now release them

What it does not mean: your program restarting from zero, or a guaranteed flood of new competitions just because the calendar flipped.

Our newest blog breaks down what to actually check this month, starting with whether your agency is under a continuing resolution.

Two ways to answer a funder's request for an "innovative" approach.

Weak: "Our program uses innovative, cutting-edge methods to serve the community."

Strong: "Most programs in this field rely on one-time workshops. Ours pairs each participant with a mentor for six months, because our pilot data showed that follow-up contact, not information alone, is what changed behavior."

The second version never uses the word "innovative." It doesn't need to. It names the standard approach, says what's different, and grounds the difference in evidence.

Read "What Does a Funder Mean by 'Innovative'?" for more on how to make this case in your own proposal. Link in bio to our blog website.

Before you write the word "innovative" into your next proposal, ask yourself this.

Have we named the standard approach we're improving on? Can we explain, in plain language, what we're doing differently and why? Would this section still be convincing if we deleted the word entirely? If that last answer is no, the section needs more substance, not a stronger adjective.

"Innovative" is one of the most common words in a funding announcement, and one of the least defined.

Reasonable people read that word in the guidelines and start to panic a little. Do we need to reinvent our program? Mention new technology? Here's the truth: funders reviewing hundreds of proposals can spot novelty for its own sake immediately, and it rarely reads as strength. Our latest blog explains what funders are actually asking for.

Before you add one more opportunity to the pipeline, ask these three questions.

Do we have the staff to write this well? Do we have the staff to deliver it well if it's funded? Is this a strong enough fit that a yes is genuinely good news? If the answer to any of those is no, that opportunity isn't a pipeline addition. It's a pipeline risk. Our newest blog explains how to protect your strongest fit opportunities.

More proposals in the pipeline isn't the same thing as more opportunity.

Caption: It's tempting to measure grantseeking ambition by how many applications went out this quarter. But proposal count has almost nothing to do with whether those proposals were competitive, or whether your organization could deliver if every one of them were funded. Our latest blog breaks down what actually determines your real capacity.

What does your organization actually do in the seven days after a funding decision?

Not the day the email arrives. The week after. Do you know why you got a no, and is that reason written down anywhere your team will see it again? If it's a yes, has finance seen the award letter yet? Our newest blog breaks down the specific steps for both outcomes, and the two things worth doing either way.
