As I head North for the Winter season, leaving my home, family and friends behind to chase my dreams, my mind wanders to Peahi (Jaws) and the reason why we do what we do. Its moments like these that make us feel truly alive.

The surf episode of the series “Edge Of The Earth” airs on @HBO this Tuesday.

We had an epic trip with @tetongravity living in the desert for three weeks surfing, surviving and shedding a light on the mining of beaches in the area with @protectthewestcoast

When you have to ride a very big board and the predominant demand is control, thoughts toward setting a rail and holding the desired line have us here.
This board was built from the reference of a 6’9 1/2” I made for @granttwigbaker which he connected with.
The experimentation here is in a chambered, waterproof cavity on the toe side rail. It has baffles within. Paddle out hollow. Fill the rail. Set the heavier, yet already water set, toe edge and flow. Empty, compare, share.
Both are flax/flax basalt builds and have octagonal chined rails, accelerated twist in the exit rocker and hideous, but delicately balanced foil. Mapped out textural changes in predictable fail zones are throughout the bottom casting thoughts toward a vortex shredding.
Certainly not the prettiest of boards, but with blinders on and a commitment to confidence and control, here we are.
Stamped pattern repeats and offset prints to promote calm in the deep and heavy waters, imaging a third point focus opportunity in many of the elements here from which to center breathing and focus.
Honored to receive the second place award amongst a herd of talented board builders and brands being represented @boardroomshow best of show category this year.
It’s not lost on me having the likes of Darrick Doerener, @chris_christenson73 @lylecarlsonsurfboards and others look over a board to be used in consequential conditions and green light the ideas. Introducing a couple new models. Actually refinements of 40 years of shaping for large waves. The El Niño 8’0”- 9’0” and the Super El Niño 9’0”- 10’4”. I was hoping to get to the @boardroomshow this weekend. Wanted to see the creations of my contemporaries. But arriving home after five weeks in Polynesia I was buried with orders. I love inspirational stories.

Here is another one.

My friend @granttwigbaker has just won the Men’s Biggest Paddle award at surfings @bigwavechallenge awards.

Top athletes have a few prime years when they win many awards. Every now and then you get some exceptional souls who break this mould and keep on winning well beyond the norm.

I’m not sure how old Twig is but i can tell you he’s no spring chicken. To win, again and again, in a sport demanding such a high level of skill, athletic ability, and pure guts is truly amazing. Form is temporary, class is eternal, age is a concept.

Grateful to have connected with Twig during many memorable sessions over the last 30 years. Here is to many more champ !

Well done Twig ! You frikken legend.
