Here's a below-the-radar producer from #Burgundy with "château" in its name. First time trying their Pinot and this gets the job done for casual drinking. Excellent value!

'15 @chateaudemeursault_ Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru (magnum): Typical rich fruit nose of the commune. There's cherry + a little blueberry. Even a whiff of menthol at the start. Well weighted palate with a healthy but balanced dose of acids. Flavours of oak are first to find me, before dense, dark cherry + berry. The ripe, sleek tannins only accentuate how delicious this unpretentious wine is. 13.5% abv. 92 pts @wine_spectator.

Almost there with post 4 / 5.

It's been a while since I've had the @handpickedwines Wombat Creek siblings together. This vineyard boasts the highest elevation in Yarra Valley. The style is Burgundian, with naunce and refinement. Both are incredible at this juncture. But will also develop gracefully over the next 5 years.

So thrilled that A + V finally got to try the pair on their last visit to SG.

This '08, '09, '10 Vina Tondonia mini vertical is part of my Spanish armada that landed some time back.

Reminds me of my immense pleasure + privilege of visiting the historic @lopezdeherediaoficial winery after harvest last year. "Unlike many of the neighbours in Haro's historic train station district, the winery still uses equipment from a bygone era to vinify wine. What's most impressive is the labyrinth of subterranean cellars covering more than 30,000 sq m! Since 1877, they have been crafting their own barrels in-house, using traditional tools till this day." Time for another #comPAIRison. This time it's Jean Claude Berrouet's (winemaker at Ch. Petrus for the longest time) project in Ribera del Duero. 2016 was the maiden vintage for @vivaltus.

'16: Even with just 1% more Tempranillo than the '17, this takes on a completely different personality. But I reckon that's due to the growing season and other factors. Initial funk and red fruit jam. Then darker notes of raspberry cola, coffee bean, textbook fig + dill. Cool tone nose. Not quite heavy core wrapped in firm, tightly knit tannin that comes across as dusty. Dusky palate with highlights of bramble, coffee bean, metal. After 2 nights in the fridge: Dark cherry + English breakfast tea flavours.

'17 : More intense aromas here compared to the earlier. The extra 1% of Cab Sauv comes as greener, BDX-like minty black fruit, charcuterie, cola. Similar in body weight to the '16 but feels fresher here. The texture is clearly different with thick, grainy tannin. There's a clearer grain of toasted oak here; no metallic naunce; dark fruits with cola again. More directional. After 2 nights: Salty black olive. Here's one for those seeking a more "International Variety" character.

Seeing the tech notes on opening the case, I knew this @wine_advocate 97-pointer was going to be special - not just good. After savouring a bottle of this amazing 2013 vintage, I'm convinced Ilatraia deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the other Super Tuscans. This is the foremost expression of Maremma from @brancaia.winery.

'13 Brancaia Ilatraia: The tenuta describes this: "freshness, precision and elegance" + "perfect balance between maturity and finesse". This isn't hyperbole - maybe even an understatement. It's utterly remarkable.

Beyond the unmistakable Italian aromatic stamp of charming funk / volatile acidity, the immediate impression is a red spectrum reminiscent of Brunello. Which is soon displaced by the familiar BDX aromas of black cherry, cassis, dark plum, florals, dried herbs, cut capsicum, earth. There's an added olive tapenade for complexity. Mouthfeel is substantial without being overbearing, with spot-on acids. The mass of juicy dark fruit interwoven with heavy roasted Arabica is a sublime example of sapidity. And while the whole is enmeshed by grainy (not gritty) tannin, the effect from the ripe phenolics is strength + sophistication. Flavours wind down like endlessly sweeping Tuscan country lanes.

After a hectic morning of underground exploration (see previous post), I recharge and reward myself at Els Jardins de Codorniu. Patatas bravas and steak tartare washed down with 2020 Grand Rose Reserva Cava. Simplicity with all major food groups covered!

This is a charming gastronomic space at the Codorniu winery with garden seating bordered by olive trees. Be transported to a halcyon era of carefree, overflowing bubbles. The interior is elegantly simple and - first time seeing this for a restaurant - comes with an attendant chapel that seems to remain consecrated.

Again, much thanks to @bodegasrc for making this visit to the birthplace of #Cava and Espana's oldest winery (estb. 1551) possible. @grapeful.wines retails Raventos Codorniu wines here in SGP. This wraps up the posts from Oct's Italy + Spain sojourn.
