Great wine, but needs some time. Are you familiar with this producer?🍷

Today’s wine: Xavier Vignon,
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme
2019. France 🇫🇷

When I opened this bottle, the first impression was not that impressive. However, the wine evolved very nicely and the day after it was a completely different and a very good. Usually I am not that patient, but very happy I made an exception 😊

This wine, which is Xavier’s flagship wine, has great ageing potential. It’s a blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, and the rest is a mix of other permitted varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape 🍇

The wine has a medium+ ruby colour and nose. It’s a full body wine with pronounced intensity. Medium+ alcohol and length. Medium acidity and tannins. Cherry, plum, cranberry, earth, graphite, leather and oak. Very good wine, but needs time in the decanter if you drink it now. Drink for the next 10+ years.

Excellent wine and a great excuse. What do you think?😀

I am not really a dessert guy, but when I saw this wine, served out of a magnum bottle,
on the menu I had to make an exception and ordered a nut cake! Great excuse don’t you think?😆

Today’s wine: Velich, Seewinkel Beerenauslese 2017. Burgenland, Austria 🇦🇹

Burgenland accounts for nearly one third of Austria’s wine production. They are best known for their red and botrytized sweet wines although dry whites are being produced as well.

This wine has a deep orange colour and medium+ nose. It’s a full body and sweet wine with pronounced intensity. Medium acidity, low alcohol and long length. Characteristic includes apricots, stone fruit, pear and hits of sherry (from the barrels). This is an excellent wine that drinks very well now, but will continue to develop for another few years, at least!😊

A beautiful Riesling, have you tried it? 😊

Today’s wine: Wittmann Westhofener Riesling VDP. Aus Ersten Lagen 2021. Rheinhessen Germany 🇩🇪

Another Riesling for my cellar, highly recommended😀

The grapes come from the Westhofen hills, mostly from the Morstein GG site, but also Brunnenhäuschen GG. The soil consists of heavy clay marl with limestone, giving the wine its typical chalky limestone minerality🍇

Yield reduction and hand selection of the grapes are applied and fermentation is done in large barrels.

The wine has a deep lemon colour and medium nose. It has a medium+ body, intensity, acidity and long length. Medium- alcohol. Characteristics includes peach, lemon, lime, hints of oak and minerality. Excellent wine with great balance. Drinks well now, but will develop for another decade or more.

Are you familiar with wines from Luberon?🍷

Today’s wine: Domaine de la Royère Quercus 2016. Luberon, France 🇫🇷

Located in Provence, the Luberon appellation was created in 1988 and white, rosé and red wines are produced. For the latter Grenache and Syrah must constitute 60% of the blend, but Mourvèdre is another approved and commonly used variety.🍇

This wine has a deep ruby colour and medium nose. It’s a full body wine with medium+ intensity, alcohol and length. Medium acidity and medium- tannins. Characteristic include plum, strawberry, black cherry, black pepper, baking spice and herbs.

Very good wine that drinks well now, but will continue to develop for another 3-4 years🍷

Impressive Napa wine, have you tried it?😊

Today’s wine: Stags' Leap Twelve Falls 2011. Napa Valley, United States 🇺🇸

Stags' Leap has a long history dating back to 1872 when the Grigsbys first planted grapes until today under its current ownership of Treasury Wine Estates.

The origin of the name Stags' Leap is not well documented, but legends refer to stags leaping to escape and elude hunters or to their deaths rather of being hunted down.

This estate grown wine has a deep ruby/purple colour and medium+ nose. It’s a full body wine with pronounced intensity medium+ length and alcohol. Medium acidity and tannins. Characteristics includes dense fruit with blackberries, blueberries, cherries and hints of eucalyptus and oak. Excellent wine that drinks very well now, but has many years of further development to go!🍷

Beautiful red, what is your take on Argentinian wine?🍷

Today’s wine: Zuccardi, Emma Bonarda 2016, Mendoza Argentina 🇦🇷

Due to the effects of global warming and decisions producers make, it is increasingly rare that I find a red wine at 12.5% alcohol. The silver lining, I appreciate them even more when I do find them!…. and if you are in it for the alcohol, you can always have an extra glass😆

Zuccardi is a well known family owned producer that is run by Sebastian Zuccardi, whose grandfather planted their first vines in the Uco valley in 1963. This particular wine is named after Sebastian’s grandmother and the wine is a tribute to her personality🍷

The wine has a deep ruby colour and medium nose. It’s an elegant wine despite having plenty of body and intensity. Medium- alcohol, tannins and medium+ length. Characteristic include blackberries, plum, smoke, tobacco, spices and a hint of oak. Excellent wine that drinks very well now and will continue to develop for at least another 3-5 years.🍇

Great Shiraz from S.A., are you familiar with this producer?🇿🇦

Today’s wine: Saronsberg provenance Shiraz 2019, Tulbagh, South Africa

Located in the Upper Breede River Valley in Tulbagh, this site is surrounded by mountains. With its unique characteristics and terroir it brought the first settlers here some 300 years ago and it’s today the location of the Saronsberg winery.

Following a wildfire forcing them to replant their vineyard just 2 months after acquiring the land, Saronsberg began their wine making in 2004. Their first harvest was Sauvignon Blanc that was released a year later. Not long after, the first Provenance Shiraz was also released🍇

This wine has a deep purple colour and medium+ nose. It’s a full body wine with pronounced intensity, medium+ alcohol and length. Medium tannins and medium- acidity. Dark cherries, plums, blackberries, blueberries, cloves, oak, vanilla and pepper. Very good wine that drinks well now, but will continue to develop for another few years🍷

Beautiful Bordeaux, have you tried it?🍷

Today’s wine: Chateau Beychevelle Grand Vin 2003. Saint-Julien, France 🇫🇷

The story of Chateau Beychevelle started in the early 17th century when the first Duke of Épernon, a highly recognised admiral, became the owner. He was so respected that that ships passing by would lower their sails to show their respect. Inspired by this, the château’s emblem was created.

The estate covering 250 hectares has approximately 90 hectares under vine with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot 🍇

Located at the edge of Gironde the terroir is characterised by its regulating effect of the climate, the vines extensive root system and the gravel retaining the heat from the sun.

This wine has a medium garnet colour and and medium+ nose. It has a medium+ body, intensity and length. Medium acidity, alcohol and tannins. Characteristics includes leather, cherry, blackberries, cassis, and smoke. Excellent wine that is in its drinking window, but will continue to shine for years!👍

Good find from my recent Italy trip. Have you tried Bardolino wines?😊

Today’s wine: Zeni Bardolino Superiore Classico 2021. Bardolino, Italy 🇮🇹

Bardolino wines are generally not the highest rated, but this is a nice one that I picked up from one of the local producers visiting Bardolino.

The Classico wine comes from the original zone of Bardolino DOC and it’s located on the east side of Lake Garda in the northern part of Italy. Varieties to be included are Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara and up to 20% of the blend can come from another variety, often Merlot. With additional ageing, the wine can be labelled Superiore, which has a DOCG status.

This wine has a medium+ ruby colour and medium nose. It’s a medium body wine with medium acidity and intensity. Medium- tannins and medium+ length. Characteristics includes cherries, cranberry, oak and chocolate. Very good, balanced and elegant wine. Drink now and for the next 3-4 years🍷

Big Chenin Blanc. Are you familiar with this producer?😊

Today’s wine: Post House, Stamp of Chenin 2021. Stellenbosch, South Africa 🇿🇦

This farm, just 7km kilometres off the cooling False bay cost is situated on a ridge in the ward of Stellenbosch. It was bought by Hermann Gebers in 1981 and the first experimental barrels were made in 1996, followed by the first release a couple of years later.

The Homestead was originally a Post Office and the winery was therefore named Post House. Today, the vineyards include plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier🍇

This wine has a lemon+ colour and medium nose. It’s a full body wine with with high alcohol, pronounced intesity and medium acidity. Characteristics includes stone fruit, aniseed, dairy, almonds, ripe lemon beeswax and oak. This is a good wine that I happily would drink again, but a bit hot on the palate. Drink now or for the next few years👍

All the boxes ticked!🍷✅

I bought this bottle some 10 years back in Hong Kong and it has since then travelled the world (well almost). With its 17 years, and not always the most gentle treatment, I was not sure what to expect, nor when to open the bottle. But when I finally did, the wine delivered on all cylinders, it was such a treat!😊

Today’s wine: Poggio San Polo, Brunello di Montalcino 2006. Tuscany Italy 🇮🇹

The wine has a medium+ ruby colour and nose. It has a medium+ body, intensity, acidity and long length. Medium tannins and alcohol. Characteristics include wood, earthy, leather, cherry, raspberries and smoke. This is an excellent wine that drinks perfectly now… but will have a few more good years to go.

Stunning high altitude Pinot from Uco Valley. Have you tried it?🍷

Today’s wine: Domaine Nico, Grand Père Pinot Noir 2020. Uco Valley, Mendoza Argentina 🇦🇷

This vineyard, located in Villa Bastias, Tupungato in Uco valley dates back to 1993 and it’s situated at an altitude of 1120m. Uco Valley is characterised by poor soils, with good drainage, continuous breeze and known for producing healthy grapes and low yields.

This excellent Pinot is one out of five wines by this producer. Fermentation is partly done using whole bunches and the production is approximately 15000 bottles🍇

This wine has a medium- ruby colour and medium nose. It is a medium body wine with medium+ acidity, intensity and length. Medium alcohol and medium- silky tannins. Characteristics include raspberries, strawberries, cherry, perfume, cranberry and violet. This is a stunning wine that will develop for another 3-5 years, maybe more!🍷
