With a Ph.D. and passion... 🍷

...and, shifting gears and fell in love with wine...

...a love affair that has lasted...

That sounds exactly like me, right?

Earlier in August, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by @paulkalemkiarian on his podcast @winetalkspodcast.

I had so much fun talking about history, wine, of course, the Italian wine scene, wine in Sweden, and Armenia, wine communication, and much more...

Paul not only has this fab podcast but he is also the owner of the Original Wine of the Month Club which was founded by his father in 1972 and has been providing the wine club members with selected wines every month for over 50 years.

𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

Last week, I was judging wines at Emozioni dal Mondo, which is a yearly wine competition organized by the Valcalepio Consortium and sponsored by the Cantina Sociale Bergamasca.

Emozioni dal Mondo is a wine competition focused on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon wines, with wineries submitting wines from all over the world.

This year, it took place in the small town of Villa di Serio.

This is where my thoughts on wine judging as part of a cultural experience come in.

Emozioni dal Mondo, as I argued, is not only about tasting and judging wine.

It's about meeting people from different countries, with different perspectives.

It's about experiencing the local territory and its history through wine.

This year in Bergamo, three different themes stood out:

📌Mechanics - The wine judging took place directly in a mechanical workshop of OMCN, a company in Villa di Serio that produces hydraulic lifts.

📌Local history - We got a tour of the sanctuary of Santa Maria in Campis and the aristocratic Villa Carrara, which dates back to the 15th century.

📌Opera - Opera is so deeply rooted in Italian culture. What could be better than an exclusive concert with two opera singers and a pianist from La Scala in Milan?

Have you ever attended a wine event where the cultural experience stayed with you just as much as the wines?

A Sunday with Zorzettig winery

I just entered my hotel room at Al Castello hotel and restaurant, to get settled before the Zorzettig event starts.

I found these thoughtful welcoming words and gifts from Annalisa, the owner of Zorzettig winery, that made all the difference.

It made you feel special....and welcome.

Now, I feel I'm getting into the Friuli mood.

Stay with me today and tomorrow for more wine news.

Ti posso dire una cosa...?
May I tell you this...?

Hmm, ci devo pensare. Non so quale storia possa sembrare professionale.'

Can you guess the harvested red grape?

Last Sunday and Monday I was visiting Fabrizio at Podere dell'Anselmo. We were a group of friends who had organised a Sunday afternoon by the pool followed by dinner, to celebrate the coming birthday of our friend Nadia. And, the fact that she went back to Singapore two days ago.

Now, we are very sad.

We had a great time and enjoyed an aperitivo by the pool with his Vermentino wine. At the dinner, we had mainly Terre di Bracciatica - a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon - that Fabrizio says is a bestseller at the bars in town.

We also tasted his Franco Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana (2022 I believe) and Pax Toscana IGT (not sure if 2021 or 2022) which is his 100% Colorino wine. I love that one. ❤🍷

Fabrizio had another engagement and was not there Sunday evening, so it was his brother who offered us a taste of the wines.

Then, Monday morning, Fabrizio was back and had us join his tasting with a group of American tourists, as you can see in the video.

Podere dell'Anselmo is always a home away from home.

💬 By now you have guessed the grape in the video, right? Just write your answer in a comment below.

The pull for wine was too strong...

Joking.

I wanted to discover some wine bar, though, while being in Mannheim and found a natural wine bar close to the hotel. @salute.mannheim

I'm here for a family weekend. My brother and sister-in-law lives in Mannhein Tonight, they are throwing a big party to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Anyway, I had a Riesling 2025 from Eymann, an organic and biodynamic producer in Gönnheim, which was really nice, fresh, floral, herbal, some fruit, smooth, very enjoyable.

Now, I am heading off to get ready for the party.

Cheers!

𝗣𝘂𝗼𝗶 𝗮𝗶𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗶 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶?

6 Days Exploring Wine in Puglia

Well, I was in Puglia in early June visiting friends and wineries mainly in the northern part of Puglia.

Some of my fav Puglia grape varieties such as Bombino bianco and Nero di Troia was on the daily agenda.

"I started in San Severo, where I visited my friends at D’Araprì winery, whom I had not visited for some years. I got to spend some time with Anna, Maria Antonietta, Girolamo, Louis, Daniele, and Antonio, part of the “older” founding and the second generation at D’Araprì winery. I then joined the press tour of the yearly Radici del Sud event and continued to Gioia del Colle for the usual wine competition the following days. The wines of southern Italy have always been close to my heart: the lesser-known areas (that are slowly becoming more known), the local grapes, the people, and the southern atmosphere.

When I go to Puglia, I always discover something new, whether a new producer or a development in the expression of the territory. I also get a glimpse into the latest changes or news. In this context, I will focus more on the northern part of Puglia, such as Daunia or Capitanata, which comprises the province of Foggia and the Bari-Andria-Trani area, which includes Castel del Monte. Northern Puglia is an area with lots of history, nature and landscapes of extraordinary beauty, a bit wilder and more fascinating than in the picture-perfect photos from Alberobello or Monopoli."

Trust your gut. Ascolta il tuo istinto.

You don't need more stories. You already have enough of them at your winery.

You just need to notice them, take them out of the drawer somewhere at your winery, be it more personal stories or stories linked to your winery’s values.

As a wine producer you are often too immersed in your daily work, and too close to see what really matters.

Help your audience see what you want them to know about your farm, the wine production, and the daily activities.

Sometimes the best stories are hiding in plain sight.

What's one defining story that you never thought of telling, because you thought that it was not important enough?

PS. The video snippets are from the @conte.spagnolettizeuli farm that I visited earlier this year, located close to Andria in Puglia.

🇮🇹

Slowing down, does not mean doing less

...or being slow...

Rather, it's a way to take a step back and think things through, and working with more intention and purpose.

1. Slow down...to see what really matters

Not everything is urgent, even if it feels that way.

When we constantly react, we rarely have time to think strategically. Creating space allows us to make better decisions and communicate with more clarity.

2. Build better relationships, that opens up for opportunities

Whether you are a winery or any other business, every customer or importer might not be for you.

You need the right people. The people who share your values and with whom you can build trust over time.

3. Saying no is an important part of a good strategy

Every "yes" takes time and energy.

Sometimes the most strategic decision is saying no to opportunities that don't align with who you are or where you want to go. That creates room for better opportunities later.

➡️ What is one thing you have stopped saying "yes" to that has made your work much better?
