KSA Graphic Design Course Publication [1/2]

When designing a graphic language that reflects the experience of Kingston Graphic Design students and the course it is vital to showcase what goes on behind the scenes, with a focus on highlighting the experimental process of projects that features the amazing workshops here at this course.

This group project outcome is a publication and poster that incorporates a collection of interviews with alumni, experimentation from Level 6 students, within different folded components that together reflect the experience of a graphic design student here at Kingston.

[1-5] Passing Refelctions

Passing Reflections is a visual exploration of motion sickness during daily transit. By capturing passing reflections, movement, and blur on my commute to and from university, this photobook translates the dizziness, disorientation, and distorted reality of everyday spaces into a tangible visual experience.

[6-10] Nuqtash

This project explores the relationship between Arabic calligraphy and Latin typography through the creation of a typeface inspired by post calligraphic qualities such as stroke contrast, curvature, and rhythm. Through research into Arabic typography and multiscript design, the project moved away from directly imitating Arabic script and instead investigated how the visual and expressive qualities of calligraphy can exist within a contemporary Latin typeface.

[11-15] Arabizi

Arabizi, is a magazine-style publication exploring, a hybrid writing system that combines Arabic, Latin characters, and numbers within digital communication. It argue that Arabizi should not be viewed as a threat to the Arabic language, but rather as a form of linguistic adaptation that reflects hybrid cultural identities and fosters community among younger users, particularly in Western contexts. by @graphics_by_samiya

Han-Jo is a graphic designer currently completing her final year at Kingston School of Art. Her practice explores the relationship between language, typography, and materiality. It is shaped through collaboration, research, and making, often operating together as a continuous cycle throughout the process.
Recently, she has developed an interest in translation beyond language itself, exploring how meaning shifts across people, contexts, and forms of communication. Her work investigates how design can mediate these exchanges looking at how different systems can adapt, connect, and coexist.

Samiya is a research-led graphic designer in her final year at Kingston School of Art, interested in language, culture, architecture, and contemporary typography.
Her practice often moves between physical and digital processes, using making as a way to explore and inform her research into rhythm, structure, and typographic form. Through her interest in Arabic typography and multiscript design, she investigates how calligraphic qualities such as stroke contrast, curvature, and flow can inform contemporary typographic systems without directly imitating a specific script.
