I painted this “Amara La Negra” portrait in 2021 to represent the beauty of #afrolatinidad . The reference is of @amaralanegraaln , a Dominican singer, mother , philanthropist, and an amazing representation of a proud Afro Latina ! 🦋🌼 my painting was featured in the art exhibition at @mcclasf for 2023’s Hispanic heritage month celebration.

As a proud Afro Latina myself, my art represents a blend of my cultures and upbringing. When I was a little girl , I did not know of the term “Afro Latina“ and what that word meant to me celebrating Africana + Latinx cultures. In university, I researched and took courses about African settlement history within Latin America, it shaped how I wanted my art to represent the beauty and resilience of my culture 💜

This #hispanicheritagemonth , let’s create more conversations about Afro Latinx history within Latin America and in North America. Afro Latino Forum states “ Afro Latinos are people of African descent in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, and by extension those of African descent in the United States whose origins are in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

According to ECLAC, in 2015 the Afrodescendent population in Latin America amounted to 130 million people, representing 21.1% of the total population. In 2019, there were 2.2 million Afro-Latinxs in the United States, a 121% increase from 2000 to 2019. Afro-Latinxs grew at almost twice the rate of non-Black Latinos over the same period (Latino.ucla.edu).

Thank you for supporting 💖🙌🏾

A Bombshell has entered the villa…✨OLANDRIA✨

When Olandria did this Barbie inspired photoshoot, I couldn’t resist drawing her for my summer pop up events! 🌴☀️ I was inspired by vintage Barbie catalog illustrations ~ the bright colors, pin up poses, and fun retro charm 👙🏊🏽‍♀️

I brought this piece to the Summer Stack event and it got so much love 💞

Which Islander should I draw next? 🫣

Behind my painting of “Blooming Unity” (deep dive)

CSUSB Anthropology Museum commissioned me to paint a portrait of a Californian Afro Latina woman, Wendy, who shared her story of her experiences growing up Afro Latina, the colorism in the culture, and the importance of discussions of African influences in the Latin American Diaspora.

Afróntalo is a significant exhibition exploring the history and vibrant culture of Afro descendant communities in Mexico and California, hosted by CSUSB Anthropology Museum in San Bernardino in September 2023 to June 2024.

Afróntalo in Spanish means “Face It.” This phrase reflected the intention of the exhibition to recognize the erasure of Afro descendants and the prevalence of Anti Blackness in the Americas.

“On Cloud 9 About You” ☁️💋✨ Digital drawing

I’ve adored Betty Boop since I was little, watching her cartoons at my grandma’s house. This piece is inspired by that nostalgia & charm of vintage Valentine cards 💌 soft, sweet, & a little flirty 😘

I’ll be selling prints of her at @loverslanesf on Saturday, February 14 💘 (second slide)

Catch me on Balmy Alley alongside talented Bay Area mural artists for a day of live painting ❤️‍🔥
